Timmus in the South East

If you're ever near maidstone, please let me know, im desperate for your knowledge, your font of information, your wisdom, guidance, cani say any more to praise you ? lol

Hello good people of A2OC,

My time at Ian's house in Leighton Buzzard will end today. I once again extend a massive thanks to @Proghound for his kindness and generosity. Ian, you've enabled so many people in the South East to access my services during these days of Covid-19. Thank you!
I had hoped to get through some secretarial work whilst staying at Ian's, but unfortunately that hasn't happened. I've often been busy working on A2s into the evenings, so I still owe a number of club members a reply to their PM. Rest assured, no message goes ignored and I will be in touch when time allows.
This evening, I am sailing to France, and then heading to the Alps tomorrow morning. Mountaineering often means prolonged periods without internet access, so it's likely that I'll be fairly quiet on the forum for the next fortnight or so.

My services should be available from my base near Lancaster as of the week commencing Monday 28th Sept.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to visit me whilst I've been in the South East. It's been a pleasure seeing faces old and new. I hope you're all enjoying your A2's new features. :)

Best wishes to all,

Tom

Hear, hear! Massive thanks to you @timmus for enabling our visions becoming reality once again and @Proghound for his generosity and for allowing us southerners to meet Tom in such a nice, comfortable space, truly appreciated.

Its been great reading all the threads on here regarding toms retrofits/repairs to many of the "down south" members loved A2s but can i just say he belongs "up north" you lot, i personally am going to start a petition to keep Tom up north and you will see me outside No10 if that fella proghound persuades the electrical wizard of OV(ERTON) to return to leighton buzzard in 2021. climbing mountains for the next two weeks will no doubt clear his mind of looms colour dis and all the other things we have asked him to sort on our cars and i like everyone on this thread wish Tom a fab hols and look forward to visting him in lancaster in october once the batteries are recharged and enjoy your hols Tom if you read this.

Hello good people of A2OC,

Since the easing of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, I've only been working on A2s from home. I'd like to thank everyone who has brought their A2 to me and kept me (extremely!) busy during these times of great uncertainty.

I'm acutely aware that I still owe a number of club members replies to their messages. Unfortunately, being my own secretary, I can struggle to reply to private messages promptly when work is busy. Rest assured, no message goes unanswered and I will get back to you. Thanks for your patience.

Before this unusual year draws to a close, I need to seize the opportunity to climb a few mountains. Those who have met me are probably aware that, outside A2s and professional audio systems, mountains are a great passion of mine. I shall be sailing from Dover to continental Europe on Friday 4th September, where I shall find much larger mountains than those in the UK.

Prior to that sailing, I intend to base myself in Leighton Buzzard, just to the north of London. Massive thanks are owed to @Proghound for allowing me to work and sleep at his house. The date of my arrival in Leighton Buzzard depends entirely on how much demand there is for my time and services, but it won't be before Monday 24th August.

I shall do my utmost to fulfil as many requests as possible. However, please be aware that there are some limitations to the range of services that I can provide when away from home and doing jobs at relatively short notice... Some upgrades require a lot of advance planning and purchasing of parts. Some upgrades require parts that I won't have the space to transport. Some parts (such as those needed for Colour DIS) are currently out of stock. I also cannot complete all upgrades at weekends, so I'd be grateful if Saturdays and Sundays were left available to those with absolutely no alternative. The final limitations are time and the fact that there's only one of me (for which my girlfriend is eternally relieved!).

At the bottom of this message, I have tagged many club members who have made contact with me in recent months who may appreciate my greater proximity. However, this is not an exhaustive or exclusive list; my services are open to all who are able to meet me.

For those who are unfamiliar with my services, an overview can be seen here:
Kind regards,

Tom

Hi Tom,
The wipers on my 2005 A2 1.4 SE have stopped working. None of the functions work. I checked the fuse - number 6 - is that correct? The fuse was intact. I checked the relay under the passenger floor. I couldn't feel or hear the relay pull in when I operated the stalk. I fitted a used relay, purchased on eBay. Still no sign of movement of the relay. I therefore conclude that the problem is not with the wiper motor but could well be with the stalk or a connector to the stalk. I think this is a job for you. Can I call or email you to discuss?

I am sure that Tom won’t mind me jumping in here but there is a common earth problem on the wiper motor. Try to confirm this by connecting a decent earth to the motor body. This can be by using a jump lead or length of wire or even a socket extension bar to have one end on a good earth and touch the motor body while the wipers are on. This may start them working, if so a more permanent earth strap is required.

The wipers not working is a fairly common problem. The usual remedy is to attach a second earth from the wiper motor to a clean earth point on the body. You can test whether that's your problem by using a spanner or other metal object to begin with.

Beat me to it, Steve. Good to hear from you.

Well Steve and Jeff, hats off to you for your long distance diagnoses. Absolutely correct. It was the wiper motor earth. Fitted a wire from the car body to the wiper aluminium casting. Job done. It's just a pity I didn't contact the A2oc before I spent £16 on a replacement relay :)
