Today I.....

Yesterday, but too shocked

I knew I had a wheel bearing going, so rather than faff took it to an independent VAG specialist. It is coming up MOT so I asked them to do that aswell.

Didn't know, hadn't looked at brake hoses, knew one wheel bearing was on its way, but both!

The amber bulb has faded.

Needs two ball joint boots.

The blade clears the screen fine so must have a little split.

The quoted price is, wait for it......

£1700

They wont change boots, will only do full arms, then that needs a full 4 wheel set up.

So, looks like i'm doing it myself. They did say they would push out shafts and bearings for me :)

On to the Project Thread....

so front wheel bearing, easy job if you can get the drive shafts out providing you have the special tool to pull out / push in the new bearing
also factor in that you will need two new ABS sensors as you will likely break them getting them out (they rust in place)
new flexi pipes, somewhat difficult to get hold off, I had to order in the correct flexis a couple of years ago took 4 to 5 days to arrive, easy job to change. Go and apply lots of penetrating oil to the ends of the flexi and apply more every day

indicator bulbs not yellow enough - new bulbs required 10 min job to fit them

I assume they are talking about the lower ball joint, covers for these are available on ebay for £2 ea and fit perfectly search fro 331205992869 just a case of undoing the nut, apply parting pressure with a large bar and hit the side of the hub near the joint with a hammer blow to shock the taper apart. ideally fit new nuts or apply some thread lock to the old nut on re assy

New wiper blade needed - suggest Bosch at about £12

So, front wheel bearings £45ea = £90
ABS sensors (Delphi) £27ea = £54
flexi pipes £10ea = £20
Dust covers £2 = £4
Bulbs £3
Wiper blade £12
total = £183
and some time to do the job

I'm not that far from you if you need the job doing

Today @timmus came over to install full Dis, mfsw, CC, re-map and a novelty for the master; original remote key/ccu, which he completed without even blinking an eye!
My hat off to you Sir Tom; You've made that I love my A2 little bit more now it's not plain basic anymore! ?

Thanks Menno.

For those who aren't aware, I'm currently in the Netherlands, working for the members of the Dutch A2 Club. I'm doing all the upgrades that I usually do for UK members, except I have to install things on the opposite side of the car. :)

Yesterday, I did an upgrade that I'd never done before. All UK A2s, no matter how basic, came with remote central locking, so it's not something I've ever really looked into. However, when Menno asked me to add this feature to his A2, I did a bit of research and soon found the key differences. Remote central locking successfully retrofitted; pressing the butons on the key fob and watching the car respond was really satisfying!

Menno's lovely red A2 made major steps forward yesterday with a raft of upgrades including cruise control, DIS, MFSW, a remap, anti-hijack locking and, of course, remote central locking. We had a lovely afternoon in the Dutch sunshine.

Today I am progressing some Colour DIS conversions at my base in The Hague before heading toward the German border tomorrow to do a rear electric windows upgrade.

Cheers,

Tom

Today I finally worked out why one of my SD cards in my RNS-E kept showing as 'Data corrupted' and wouldn't load. Having swapped the contents between the two cards, I knew it was the data not the card. Having removed all the ID3 tags off the MP3s on the failing one, it was something in the filenames. The other card is fine with exclamation marks, all manner of brackets and other shift characters and even French accented letters in the filenames, so it was going to have to be something pretty arcane. In the end, what it didn't like was a couple of tracks on one album where the apostrophes ( ' ) in the names had been replaced by diacritics ( ` ) ... at least I think that's what they're called. Took me ages to find them! :)

The sense of achievement is somewhat muted by it being a Mk1 RNS-E though. Although the sound quality is great, after all that work I'm still limited to 400 tracks on each card according to the manual. Some sites I've read say 512, I've yet to test this, but it's still a small selection from the several thousand I have on my MP3 player. Then using the usual artist/album folder structure, you can only get it to shuffle within the tracks by one artist if you have at least one track in the artist folder, and start the shuffle from there. There are options using playlists, but they're just extra faff to my mind, and I think there are limitations on those too. The answer for me is AUX-in, which is enabled by the software update you get from using a new enough navigation DVD - the 2014 one worked for me. Then you've got the SD cards as a backup for when your MP3 player needs charging :D

Today I drove 120 miles and did my best lorry impression and managed an average consumption of 60.1mpg in my petrol 1.4. To celebrate I'm going to attend the speed awareness course that I've travelled for...

Also, yesterday I drove 200 miles with the A2 as full as stuff as was physically possible, driving like a regular car driver and it still managed an average of 45mpg, am suitably impressed!

(All mpg are taken from colourDIS so indicative values only!)

If you calculate your accurate brim-to-brim MPG and find that Colour DIS disagrees, there's the option in the Colour DIS menu to include a correction factor. :)

That is a superb result for a 1.4 petrol. Well done. No risk of getting caught speeding achieving those figures!

Ah, the joys!

To be fair the nuances of the filenaming on SD cards is a bit of a problem. It took me quite a bit of testing to find that the maximum filename length was something like 70 characters (very odd). Its a whole lot better than the issues you get from X-CarLinks.

Also, I don't think I ever got near the file amount limit, as being limited to 4GB card I didn't get enough files at 320kbps MP3s

The manual says 64 characters, don't know whether that's including the .mp3 extension or not. I knew it was somewhere round there from my experience so far, but one of the things I did in this exercise was to rename them all to just the track number and name to be on the safe side. My commercial MP3's are 320kbps but the ones I ripped from CD are 128kbps, so it turns out I've still got 1-1.5GB left on a 4GB card at the 400-file limit. I think some re-ripping at a higher setting might be in order :)

That sounds about right, makes a total of 68 (with the .mp3 being 4 characters) this appears to apply to the folder names as well.

The 128kbps ripping of your MP3s probably explains why you noticed so much difference between MP3s and CDs on the BOSE system. Also, you may well find that some of the commercially downloaded MP3s are done using VBR (VARIABLE Bit Rate) instead of CBR (CONSTANT Bit Rate). VBR files are okay for coping with band width and in the days when 4GB was more expensive enough that storing 100+ albums on them was a big attraction - in these data cheap days I use 320kbps CBR to rip ALL of my files...

It sounds like you need to do the great CD Rip like me ... I've been doing this for 2 years now on my CD collection A-Z, I've reached O so far ...
