Today I.....

Really? I didn't know that :cool:

Early 911 gearboxes (and engine cases) were magnesium, later ones aluminium. A friend bought a 72 911 S in bits from a shady dealer. He was used to later cars and had shifted quite a few ally boxes. I mentioned his early gearbox was had a mag case for lightness. He was really impressed and kept saying he couldn't believe the difference in weight when he moved it about. 'Wow, you can really feel the difference' he said.

Years later it got to the point of sending the box off for rebuild as the rest of the car was ready for its mechanics. Turned out it was half empty! It's become our standing joke. Dealer had long gone of course.
I picked the magnesium info up in one of the SSPs.

Mechanically it would be possible to sort. I think the electronic side of things are the stumbling point?

Today I hoped someone would try a DSG gearbox replacement...

It was done.
Unfortunely there was a stubborn vibration in combination with the 1.4 3pot, even after several attempts with different flywheels (this seems to be the bottleneck). So they kept the box and instead a 1.9 tdi was mated to it, and fitted in an A2;

Then, someone coupled succesfull a DSG to a 1.2Tdi lupo, but in the end also swapped to 1.9 due to problems, which where not stated exactly what or why (something with normal warm operating tempertures on the 1.2 tdi).
The project ended in parts and the owner stated that the DSG gearbox was going to be used for another project;

I think mating the dsg to a 3 pot Tdi would cause problems due to torsional vibration. The flywheel damping would need to be very specialised.
The best option would be to go for a modern 1.0 or 1.4 petrol, with the dsg designed for each.
That then adds the complexity of sorting out wiring and ecu for whatever petrol engine is used!

I rang up my insurers, RAC, enquiring about swapping from 17" 205/40s to a more comfortable standard size 15". An extra £35 plus an £25 admin fee. I asked whether this would be a one-off cost to register both wheel sets as I may want to use Winter tyres and switch back next spring. I was amazed when they said each swap would cost the same.
Are their other insurers which don't have such limited policies? I just want more comfort sand not to be fleeced at the same time.

My car is insured with Adrian Flux. They're not perfect, but they offer modified car policies that allow you to play with your car. :)

Cheers,

Tom

Weren't the 15"'s a factory option at the time? If they were an option and therefore not aftermarket you'd have to wonder why you'd need to tell them. I could understand if you were deviating from how the car was designed / engineered, but you're not. Assuming you're fitting A2 15's then all aspects of safe operation will have been researched and approved by Audi.

Theft is there view
Sticking some Sline badges on the car was going to increase premium for one member in here but a mild remap they were not interested about
Go figure the murky world of insurance (the last legal extortion I my book)

This is @Proghound post #2000 so I thought I'd better do something special(-ish).

So today I played four-car shuffle with my three A2's and my Volvo C70 which is out of shot. (The Range Rover is my neighbour's, I let him keep it on part of my drive - one reason is so that I don't have any more space in which I'd just have to park another two A2's ?) First we went from the Volvo being in front of the Storm and the Crystal blue one in front of the garage, to the point where I could get the Cobalt one out of the garage and turn it around for this shot.

And then to this ....

The Cobalt one hasn't been run for a while during the lockdown as it needs a service in the next 200 miles. But now that we're coming out the other side and it looks like I can get it to my mechanic, it's about time it had a good blast to clear out the cobwebs while the roads are still fairly clear. The Storm has been great fun on said clear roads but is now going under cover again for a little while to keep the mileage, dust and bird poo off it. I do hope it will be able to come out and play if we still get the Stanford Hall meet in August.
