Today I.....

Hi everyone! I didn’t see an introductions page however I saw this and thought I best announce that today I bought an A2. I’ve always liked the engineering behind them and oddly… despite the reviews I went for the 1.6 and I managed to find it in sport form, in black. I’m very happy. A few niggles but I bought from a dealer and they put a warranty on it. I also paid via credit card as some of the 1600 reviews did scare me a little!!
It’s just turned 73k and has a great history.
The job list to discuss with the dealer -
Glove box, literally fell off
EML doesn’t cycle with the ignition ( I do t believe the dealer has anything to do with this however the MOT tester should have failed the car for it)
Going to run a scan and see what scary codes are there. It does run very well. Rather gutless at lower RPM and an almost misfire feel occasionally on part throttle in the lower rpm. An Italian tune does help this.
Any pointers I’m all ears. I will report on the obd scan in a few days!

Most likely the inlet flaps are sticking causing it to run rough. It’s an inlet manifold off job. All depends whether the dealer is willing to part with a good few hundred kinds to sort it out or just give you your money back.

Welcome aboard, Sir. Looking forward to seeing more about your car. There is much expertise on here and I see that you are not a million miles from Stoke on Trent where you can find WOM Automotive. Very little they don't know about A2. It is all too easy to spend a lot of money with people who don't know these cars. Much cheaper to get it done once and get it done right.

Car dealers are rarely experts.

All the best, and good luck.

Must admit, I'm not alone in suspecting that one. A visit to WOM could be a good idea, at least that way you'll know whether the car is a worthwhile project. Then you'll be able to negotiate with your dealer for what sort of fine he is prepared to accept, if any. Trading standards don't like that sort of thing.

At least it’s still present. I’ve heard of more barbaric and permanent ‘solutions’ being employed sadly

Start with a VCDS or OBD Eleven scan. Post it here, and get advice.
Guessing is not very helpful.
First thing is to top up the tank with 98/99 octane, Super Unleaded, I'd recommend Shell V Power. The FSI must be run on 98/99 E5. Firstly because that's what the engine was designed to run on, and secondly, parts of the engine are not compatible with the 10% alcohol in E10.
Good luck with the sorting out, it'll be worth it.

Make the dealer aware of what you've found. He may well not have know about this, but as the seller, he is responsible for putting it right.
The EML lamp, and the fault behind it are pre-existing faults. Don't delay informing him of the car's condition, get a scan done and include that in your letter (make it in writing, or email, not verbal).
He's likely made a decent profit, so don't feel to much sympathy him.
Check out the free scan register, find a member local to you who can help.
Mac.

Thanks for the tips. First thing I did was run it almost empty and brim it with V-power. After an Italian tune up it was running much better.

I have cleaned the sealant off and plugged the unit back in. It comes on with the ignition and oddly goes off when I start the car …. 🤷‍♂️ No doubt a list of codes will be stored in the module.

I will crack the VCDS out in the week. It’s on my laptop in Devon. Not needed it since selling my A6 a few years ago.

A good device I also have if people have more than one car is an Autel maxipro. They are very easy to use and allow programming in the same way as VCDS however i suspect it’s probably more expensive as it did cost me nearly 2k GBP although this was a few years ago. The autel is at my garage in Devon so I’m still scuppered.
I have the snow to enjoy for the meantime!

He is aware that it’s not running properly.
I pictured all the evidence so far, missing screws from the cluster and some broken clips.

Once I’ve got the codes I’ll email him.

I’ll do a scan on Tuesday.

Today I .. have 3 A2s back on the drive again.

Brought Cosmo back yesterday from a holiday at WOM where the oil chain and belts and various other worn engine parts were replaced as part of an extensive refurb, NTG box fitted, a/c brought back to life and various other jobs needed due to age visible when lifted (ARB, rear axle, wiper motor, exhaust) and sundry missing fittings from the underside. A smooth 5 hour drive back up the M6/M74 showed that many rattles and squeaks have also been left in Staffordshire. Thanks again to Rob and Marcus at WOM for their professionalism and attention to detail - this won't be the last trip there.

If the EML light goes out, when you start the car, I think that means there is no active fault. Not 100% sure but if an EML associated error is present in the fault log the EML will come on, at start up, and not go out, until the fault is cleared by vcds.
You'll likely find a daunting list of errors on your first scan, but many of them will be historical, and once cleared, will not return.
Mac.

That’s my thinking as well Mac.

I’m itching to get to work and plug it in but looking out of the window ….. I think it will be a day at home tomorrow!

Having looked at the ad, that looks like a smashing example, and well worth keeping and sorting. Look forward to hearing more news of your progress.

It does… I did go to look at one that had a few more miles on, was half the price and drove nicely however it had no history and was rather tatty. This one is almost immaculate on the outside, the interior has no stained and very little wear to the drivers seat bolster. I also like the sport extras, DIS, steering wheel etc: this one has the electric seat lumbar support as well I noticed.
Once I’m over this hurdle a proboost ecu and cruise control are on the list!

For proboost: @A2Steve , cruise control: @timmus , general maintenance and expertise WOM as mentioned frequently by others on here.

I too have the sports interior on my black 1.4, otherwise known as Battersea. (As in the Dogs Home). A rescue, having been aquired as "spares or repairs" three years ago. previous owner had the car for ten years and never serviced it once. Just did the failures when MOT came up. At least the car was never bodged.

I like how everyone on here helps each other out. It’s great to hear of the cars being kept on the road. I wish the climate clan would realise its greener keeping the car you have than pumping new ones out!!

The cruise I’m happy doing myself.. I’ve done quite a few Vag cars and looks like the rest of that era where a small loom, stalk and some simple coding is required.

I do like the posts from Timmus, very knowledgable chap! I’m looking forward to learning the car.

I need to research the mentioned WOM…. Intrigued
