Today I just renewed my GreenFlag breakdown cover. Full cover (all options) £69.44. Now the renewal was £78.40 so I ignored that and went online and did a fresh application. So much for existing customers supposed to be charged no more than new customers.

At least they will renew a 19 year old car. Last year I was refused boiler breakdown insurance as my gas boiler is now over 15 years old. Of course, during that cold snap in December it broke down - kept cutting out, even after resets. Chap who does the servicing couldn't come for 2 days. A bit of investigation and it turned out to be the motorised valve. Screwfix had them in stock and I soon had heating again - phew!

I dread the A2 breaking down given the difficulties in getting many parts. My sons 9 year old Ford Focus broke down when he was on holiday in Scotland last summer. Couldn't be fixed and took 5 days to get a hire car so he was stuck in one place. The Ford was shipped back to Devon. Turns out it was a long standing fault and should have been subject to a recall. Despite the car's age, Ford agreed to replace the engine! I've never been attracted to Fords but this has raised their standing for me.

Yes the hose to the header tank which you order by asking for the "exploding hose" those 1.0 eco boost engines are a throw away lump, Ford reduced them to £1200 for a new engine last I heard. Get rid of it pronto!

This week as a test of my financial resilience my tdi 90 has started with some hesitation when under load. The fuel filter is pretty recent, injector loom has been replaced and is always ran on brand name fuels.
I'm thinking the fuel pump might be the next thing to be replaced since it's original and on 160k miles.

As a rule of thumb in a TDI75 on a long motorway run you should reckon on MPG = 130 - speed. (Probably holds better at lower speeds than higher ones, since wind resistance increases with the square of speed). So 70-75mph should give 55mpg or thereabouts, so you're not too far off. The temperature and the wind speed and direction will also have an effect. I once got 72mpg out of my Crystal one over 200 miles at 60 on the cruise control, with 3 people and luggage for a week's self-catering. But the yellow Storm only ever seemed do mid-60s on that sort of running.

A TDI90 is known to be thirstier. Several owners report averages in the 50s rather than the 60s. It would be interesting if a '90 owner could do a really long run - say from the South or South West up to Scotland at 60mph and report back what they get.

If all goes well and George collects my ATL Friday he will be driving back to Aberdeen from Bristol.

@timmus told me that one. I think it's simply based on his own experience since he used to do a lot of mileage up and down the country. It seems to hold fairly well for the smaller number of times when I've tested it.

In my case (TDi90) the calculation is the same but using 125 as the starting point to give you an approximation.

This is only valid on long journeys at speed with no traffic.

Unfortunately dealers usually add +50% to everything and even saving on packaging
Hopefully it's gonna solve the wandering temp issue though, otherwise it's a thermostat job and I wasted my money now.
BTW I've just checked it and I'd payed £49+p 2 weeks ago, and now it's £59+p!! I recommend waiting a bit for the price drop or getting it from else where tbf. Good to see the brand marks on it, but that is really high price.

Interest piqued, I had a rummage through the offerings on ebay. I was looking for a good visual match to that dull green moulding with lots of glass fill evident, a crisp brass pressing (not polished) with engraving on the rim (but not the VAG part number or name) and Luxembourg as the country of manufacture. I found this:

Does that say Luxembourg on the white label on the top of the box, partially obscured by the brass bit of the sensor? Does the black clip on yours have ">PA6.6-GF30<" moulded on the side of the clip that's can't be seen in your photo? 30% glass filled polyacetyl 6.6.

Beru have definitely been OEM supliers for VAG parts before, so this could be the same item.

It just so happens I picked up one of these last year in the same colour as the one in the eBay advert. Have cleaned and re coloured the leather to black and got a black airbag. The main plastic of the wheel seems to be a flexible rubbery sort of plastic. Whats the best to use, platicoat or Volco?

Yellow CS are thirstier because they’re faster! They even look fast standing still!!!!
I’ll appeal to @Robin.Cox for scientific back up on that!
I’ve done long runs with my 90s and 75s, all mapped and with 6speed boxes. Trouble is I sit at 75mph on cruise so it’s a bit out of their most economical speed. But the 75s are noticeably more economical

today i swapped the washer vents from old blocky ones to the soap bar style ones. what a difference!
the adjustment is fiddly af and those jets are strong! note the water marks on the wall some 12ft up 😆

...also didn't need any replacement washer tube which was a stroke of luck

Deva has led interior lights. It makes a massive difference, especially with the twist interior.
