Today I.....

Today I added an earth cable to the windscreen wiper and highly recommend it to everyone with an A2 that hasn't got one.

10 minutes, a 450mm earth cable and a washer and the jobs a good un!
Hi, Sounds a useful mod we all should do. Thanks for the pics.

An ebay search finds I can order by length, thickness and terminal hole size. What thickness and terminal hole size did you use?

Thanks

Yesterday I .... started drying out my little blue friend ...

On Friday the engine stalled when trickling through some flood water, I didn't want to risk hydrolock and so had to abandon it. Returned with a friend to tow it back a couple of hours later and the flood was too deep for the Landrover! It was now above the front numberplate on the A2. I looked inside and the water was up to the bottom of the seats :-(
So yesterday morning the flood had subsided enough to tow it back and the water level in the car had also dropped to below floor level. With a monumental effort we managed to push it onto my drive and into the garage - the sloshing noises from inside were horrible.

The under floor compartments were full, the boot was full, the space in front of the rear seats was a pond. In total I removed about 20 buckets (80 - 100 gallons) of dirty river/field water. The high water mark appears to be level with the centre console although the rear ashtray was still dry. I still need to get all the seats, trim and carpets out but space is a bit tight in the garage and removing the seats is awkward. The ECU etc have been sprayed with WD40 but all the connections look corroded already and water is still appearing in the bottom of those compartments.
I have removed the glow plugs and there doesn't appear to be water in the cylinders, but right now I can't find my boroscope to check.

I have a concern that this could be the end of the road at just under 205,000 miles ... And what is worse I'll need to buy another car and I have no idea what to look for (other than another A2).
So sorry to hear this. The wading depth for an A2 is sadly not very high due to the drain hole in the bottom of the airbox. While that might not suck enough water in to hydrolock the engine directly, I suspect that enough got ingested via that route to stop ignition. Fingers crossed you can dry everything out. I think a day outside on the drive where you remove the seats and carpets will have to be the way, there's a LOT of depth of foam backing in those rear footwells which will take forever to dry out in situ. Fingers crossed she will still run 🀞

The lack of temperature control is probably down to the control flap in the HVAC. It's controlled by a motor, to mix hot and cold air, to give the temperature you set. Googlev68, prefixed by a2oc.
You'll not take long to get used to the A2.
Mac.
Went out to the car on break, and thought, "Cycle the controls witho-ut engine running" heard the motor move, now i have nice ice cold air con when needed. Now looking at the link you sent too.

No problem at all.

This is what I bought

All you need additionally is one washer for the bolt to better secure the one end to the wiper motor, the other end which is secured by the brake fluid reservoir bracket bolt already has one.

Just to add you simply undo the two 10mm bolts add the terminal of the earth cable and screw them back in. There is nothing to lose as the nuts are captive so it really couldn't be easier.

The wiper on my car was working well btw and wasn't really slow like many A2 wipers are but I just added it more as a preventative measure, much like many add an additional earth to the starter or engine to assist starting, as we all know A2's suffer from poor earthing but it has noticeably sped up it's operation slightly and makes the motor feel stronger πŸ‘

Today, the A2 came to the rescue of the A4 (2002) TDI. I had planned to give it an oil and filter change and renew the gear box oil
(Manual) but the start up didn't go well two slow turns of the engine lots of warning lights and clicking. Yip one of the cells in the battery had gone overnight. Good job the A2 had a new battery last month so a quick swap and job back on. Ordered a new battery from Tayna which is the exact same one as the A2 & will be here by Tues latest. πŸ‘ And no need to swap over. 😁

This afternoon had the egr fight, now in a bag for Paul @ Depronman along with ECU. Great day no rain or wind. 😁.

Finally managed to find some time to give the Volco paint a try ….

Chuffed with results. I can give the super glue and baking soda trick a go as well fixing the leds in place, happy days.

Yes, seats and everything out today, the rear carpet must weigh 50lbs with all the water in it. The car is essentially dry now, CCU was a mess which cleaned up, rear speaker amp was a mess, also cleaned up, same for all the relays and the rear antenna thing in the boot. There may have been some water in the cylinders, but there certainly was in the air filter, possibly intercooler and exhaust after sitting in so much water for so long. I removed the glow plugs, span it over and some water sprayed out. The glow plugs are now back, everything is reconnected, the CCU appears to have survivied as I think everything is behaving as it should, but it won't start. Glow plugs don't heat up and no fuel arriving. VCDS won't talk to the ECU (although a Bluetooth ODBII adapter does get power) and I have proven that my VCDS works on another A2, so it looks like the ECU has gone to meet it's maker. If that is my only problem I think I've had a lucky escape ... Just need to find an ECU.

Today I, couldn't wait to get home after work to fit my new LED that came through the post and to fix the rear cluster that doesn't work, I thought I have a go at the reflow that people on this site had recommended as a fix. Now I wasn't completely confident with my soldering skills but for some reason, it worked, and I am chuffed to bits with the results.

So, forward vanity overhead lights work with new LED's
Rear overhead lights work and with new LED's
Boot illumination light works with a single LED.

The glove light doesn't illuminate, I swapped out the bulb for a new which didn't work and checked the fuse box which seemed okay and not blown.

Any suggestions for this particular issue?

Three jobs ticked off, several to go but chuffed.

Jae.

The usual fault with the glove box light is that the contact breaker rod snaps and falls off, leaving the light on the whole time the car's sidelights are on, so the bulb eventually goes. If you've seen the bulb I guess you've already had the 'box out. Has the contact breaker perhaps broken but stuck in place between the contacts so that the circuit never makes?

I will have a look tomorrow for the contacts to see if they are indeed broken, I couldn't see anything unusual, to begin with, but I will have a closer look in the morning now I know what I am looking for.

Evening Pete,

Hope all is well, it’s been a while. Can you remove your ECU to confirm the full part number (importantly the letters at the end) as I do have a spare TDI AMF ECU. I can disable the immobiliser for you and get it in the post to hopefully get you back on the road.

If it all works out then I’ll be able to fully match ECU (immobiliser) when I’m next in your area.

Let me know the part number Sir.

Kind regards,

Tom

@Stan2stan2 the glovebox light will only come on when the glovebox is open and the CAR LIGHTS ARE ON.

If it does not work under these conditions then either the operating finger for the switch has broken off thus leaving the glovebox light on all the time the car lights are on until the bulb burns out or the switch itself is faulty.

Although Audi never supplied the part number for the glovebox switch used in the A2 I have found out what was used and replaced my faulty switch.

If you have a Dehumidifier, this will dry things out very quickly indeed.

I'll be using mine to dry Alison's interior after the (long overdue) wet-vac deep clean. 😎

Also, Alison reached 268,000 on the way back from an assignment. No picture of that figure as was driving... Grabbed this picture as soon as I could...
