Today I.....

I've upped my economy game. This week's mileage against the best I'd previously eeked out and I'm not even on the fuel light yet.

I'm confused as to my tank size, however. When I filled up after the second pic I got 36 litres in, and every week since it has been around that mark. My TDI was registered in January 2003, so I thought I would have the bigger 42-litre tank?

Yes, you would have the bigger tank. The smaller one is actually slightly bigger than its stated 34L but it would probably be overflowing with 36L from the pump.

Are you using the little vent lever in the top of the pipe to let the trapped air out, so you can fill accurately to the brim? On my 42L one, from the fuel light having come on in the last 5-10 miles, I get 38-39L in by venting after each shut-off until it's actually full.

I actually wasn't aware of such a thing, so I'll be sure to investigate! My normal week is only 400 miles, so it's more of a curiosity, but to know I have more capacity than I'm getting is comforting.

Dropped off my Crystal Blue at WOM this morning. Not the worst place in the world to be going to when you realise en route that you can hear a wheel bearing while cornering - added to the list for Marcus to sort ? Saw a very well known beastie inside awaiting some fettling too.

Now have two yellow Storms at my house since their loan car is also one - goes very nicely I must say, feels like it's remapped. Put it this way, I'll be disappointed if it isn't since it's no slower than any of mine :D Didn't open it right up to check further though. The last 5 miles on the way home were eventful - first a pebble on the windscreen at 65mph  but luckily no cracks. Then the ABS light came up while taking a roundabout. I'm sure that'll be sorted when it gets back.

It runs along nicely Ian. The A1 alloys with the larger 16" continental tyres makes the sports suspension a fair bit smoother.

Today I .... picked up a little something from Facebook on the way to see my son :D

All four rims are near-immaculate, two centre caps are almost mint, 3rd one excellent and I've run worse than the 4th on the set of six-spokes that the intended recipient car came with. I'll put some rubber on those ready for when it's time to take the winter pepperpots off. Been after a set of these for a while, very happy with them :D

Today the OSS on my FSI stopped working with a loud bang and then some nasty noises. Managed to get it closed after about 5 minutes of manual assistance and fiddling the switch . Whatever is meant to be joined on the right hand side is no longer in one bit. It was dark when it happened so not seen it in the light yet. Oh bother. I had been giving it regular exercise to try and free it up and stop it from juddering. @Kleynie I will need to pay you a visit at some point to see if its fixable. Just a couple of hundred miles off 100,000 too.

Today I.... Had the undertray off to replace the air filter and change the gearbox oil. The air filter was apparently 3 years and 30k miles old, but it certainly looked all off that:

The old gearbox oil (6 years, 60k miles) didn't look too bad and a bit of pipe on the end of the funnel made refilling a breeze:

130k miles maybe!!!
No way that as seen only 30k miles unless it did them down a coal mine
Very common issue with the A2 dodgy mechanic can’t be arsed to remove under-tray and just tick the box on air filter changed
Makes my blood boil

I had one that meant to be 2 years old which was 14.5 k miles when I removed the air filter bottom half of it fell out. Looked like a family of mice had been living in there and eaten the filter for every meal

Sad to say that it was last "changed" by an Audi dealer, according to their invoice to the owner at the time. It was then apparently "inspected" by a VW/Audi specialist 15k ago. I don't think either took the undertray off.

I work with a couple of chaps who were previously a mechanic and a parts manager for a franchise dealer and some of their tales are shocking. Whilst I sometimes find it a pain working on my own vehicles, I do at least know when a job's been done, which is a satisfying to know.
