Today I.....

Today I......did a spot of off-roading along the Raiders' Road. I was glad of my 15" wheels, although I did manage to avoid all the bad potholes!

...Confirmed the final list of jobs for my specialist garage to finally crack on with:

1. Full Service including cambelt kit / water pump replacement

2. Thermostat + seal and coolant temp sensor replacement and flush heater

3. Oil pump / balance shaft chain and sprockets + crank seal replacement

4. PTW Gearbox swap

5. Replace the corrosion-prone pressed steel front arms with the Lemforder cast items, also the inner bushes

6. Install the Calix engine heater kit

7. Fitting of the new winter tyres to the set of winter wheels (may have to have these wheels swapped with the Pepper pots on the car by the time it’s ready for collection!)

8. Twin-horn conversion

With those jobs done you will feel so good driving it, knowing that you have tackled many of the weak spots. Peace of mind indeed!
nice one!

Thanks Steve, the objective with Merlin was to cover all the known weak points so as to ensure as far as possible the car gives many years of trouble-free service.

In addition to this list, there is of course the (had to stop myself from saying “your”) Bluetooth-enabled auto headlamp switch conversion with coming / leaving home functionality and the beauty ring also, but I will fit that once Tom @2work has finished it and sent it on.

After all this time and expense I have to continually remind myself that I’ve never even sat in an A2 before, so when I finally get to meet Merlin for the first time, it’ll be interesting to gather my thoughts - I’m hoping that the six speed conversion in particular won’t feel like an upgrade at all - just standard spec. We will see.

That is how the six speed feels.
Normal driving and at higher speeds it seems natural to put it into 6th.

You really are approaching this in the right way by the sound of it. ??

Replaced drop links on minty, there had been some irritating rattles and knocks that were getting worse so having a spare pair of Myelle drops in the garage I decided to swap them.
Biggest wedding tackle job was getting the old ones orf, they actually didn't look that old but the nuts had really got a grip so out came the mini grinder and off they came.
Definitely cheap and not so cheerful ones compared to the new ones.
Plenty copper slip and bolted up, the difference is amazing.

It is Belgium oil. It is cheap (paid 18 Eur for 5 l with discount) and has wv 505.01 approval so should be good for tdi.

Is it not a bit too thick isn’t 5w30 not the recommend weight?
