Today I.....

Lovely choice of colours, I used to have a 3 series in aqua and loved it, the brown though is not my type of colour but it is a nice job done on both.
I'll be quizzing you on a few things at the get together on the 30th if you don't mind as you do have a lot of experience with the A2, promise not to over do it and spoil your day though?

From memory it cost around £6000 to build with me doing lots of the labour and it sold for around 4; so a £2000 loss in a few months. I don’t go that far with them anymore ?
I can imagine the biggest outlay for the build is the respray, I can see that costing at least 2k, worth it if you are keeping it but not so much if you sell it on.

Got into day 2 of fitting the ‘new’ intercooler to Tonka. Massive thanks to Ian @Proghound for letting me have it as after a little and a spot of paint fettling (from my ever capable engineer father!) it looks like new. It’s running very well up on the axle stands. Just need to ‘pop’ the bumper, wheel arch liners, undertray and wheels back on and it should then be ready for its MOT on 16th. ?
Hi,
Looks like I'll be tackling this job too! May I ask where you bought the new intercooler from?

Today I was happily hopping around Notting Hill with the OSS open and enjoying every second of it ☺️

I was kindly donated a 2nd hand but fully intact intercooler by @Proghound who was upgrading to an alloy @timmus one. It might be worth dropping either @A2Steve or @Clackers a line to see if either have one in apparently decent shape, though there are no guarantees that a second hand part will last. The other option is the @timmus all alloy one if your car is a ‘keeper’ and you’re comfortable with that level of investment. It was quite rightly pointed out that this is a relatively labour intensive job so at least worth considering.

Thanks, as much as I'd like an alloy one I don't think my budget would stretch. There's a fair few available online (Autodoc) but I don't know about their quality. Prices start from £24.70, which seems worryingly cheap! Most are around the £50 mark though.

What age is your car? There is the issue of the change in size of the maf sensor to consider.

Age of the car now is irrelevant as they only manufacture the later standard intercoolers with the smaller sensor. It is not the MAF sensor in the intercooler it is the MAP sensor but you will be OK with the smaller sensor. One thing to watch for is some manufacturers are drilling out the small spigot on the lower part of the intercooler. This is not used on the A2 so if it is drilled it will need to be plugged off.

Not today but yesterday we were driving along Beachy Head and saw not one but two A2s in the space of a couple of hundred yards, both parked up, one Dolphin Grey, the other Silver.
I wondered if either of them were forum members?

Finally had my MOT and a pass - #backontheroad. :)

Advisories again on the LED rear indicator bulbs being slightly discoloured - to my eyes orange, but clearly to the tester not orange enough.
Darren, I tried loads of led indicator bulbs. Brightest and most vivid I use are these. Expensive but effective, from Amazon.

This afternoon I took a drive out in the A2 after I finished work. Due to surgery and COVID-19, I'd only travelled just over 100 miles in her in the last 12 months. It was great to be behind the wheel again and to fully appreciate just how fabulous these cars are.

Mechanical yet refined, the FSI pulled well in each gear and throughout the rev range, gearbox like a knife through butter and she held the road with aplomb. An all round special place to be and car to drive. One of the best kept secrets in the automotive world, as biased as I am, it remains true.
