Today I.....

This afternoon I took a drive out in the A2 after I finished work. Due to surgery and COVID-19, I'd only travelled just over 100 miles in her in the last 12 months. It was great to be behind the wheel again and to fully appreciate just how fabulous these cars are.

Mechanical yet refined, the FSI pulled well in each gear and throughout the rev range, gearbox like a knife through butter and she held the road with aplomb. An all round special place to be and car to drive. One of the best kept secrets in the automotive world, as biased as I am, it remains true.
Really nice to hear you have been out and about Darren and enjoyed your trip in the A2 ?..

Today I made the decision to stick with my A2 over a BMW i3.

To cement the decision I spent £440 on service parts, new front brakes, rear springs, rear bump stops, new dogbone mount, new drum brake innards, drum brake paint, coolant flange and seal kit, gear tower lube and the kit for the auto boot opener

Just the new gearbox oil to find (Crewe Audi asked for a price to supply).

Now I just need to find a spare week to do it all...

Good choice, the i3 is totally useless in the snow!

Oh no! I’ll miss out on ‘can’t get to work, sorry boss...’ snow days now! Stupid A2 being good in snow! Regret regret regret!

I’ve heard they are indeed poor in snow.

How much worse than an A2 TDI with no weight in the rear and next to no tire thread could they be? ?
What exactly makes the i3 terrible in that regard? Heavy weight and skinny tires in general?

Since over here, we are still doing "lockdown", for a lack of better things to do, I recently went through some "old" harddrives and among others, came upon some dashcam footage from the feature routes of 2019's Scotland/Skye Social.

Today as well as the rest of the weekend I then spent some time to get some of that into a state that might be publishable on the interwebs without getting me in trouble, which has meant many hours spent on mask-tracking all the plates and people in that footage. (What even are the rules for this without blurring in the UK? Conflicting sources either say it's totally fine or don't do it ?)
I am now on software #3 and can say with some confidence that the AI tracking in all three is about the same level of not great. ?
Having to re-teach the software that it is supposed to follow the yellow rectangle on the moving grey A2 shape every 7 seconds or so when the footage is an hour long takes a while to say the least.

So since the process is taking absolutely forever, I started with the one with the least amount of things to blur out, which was my Solo trip via the Quiraing in less than splendid wheather. That day, unfortunately I lost the convoy due to a detour to Talisker distillery and never managed to catch up again, so it's just me, the fog and gravel in my brakes. ? If the longest one gets finished, that should at least have more A2 than my wiper as well as less fog in it..

Looking up other videos like it, I have also just found out that just days later, construction started at the summit on what I found people describe as a Disneyland pay & display parking lot... ? Can't say I agree that that belongs in a remote place like that...

The footage is sped up to 2.5x - takes a bit too long to sit through otherwise. Hope its able to take someone back 2 years to better times. :)

@Seb_Gurkyh looking forward to seeing your footage. My understanding of UK law is basically, there's no right to privacy in public. Hence, dash cam footage doesn't require to be blurred.

You are correct, people can ask to have faces or registrations blurred but it is not required by law as long as you are in public.

Nice one Sebastian, pity the weather was not better! It was a great get together.

That's the same principle I have applied to my Project Annie / Sicily. Nothing better to cement that commitment than to invest in the A2 and to drive them as long as will be possible :)

It is truly satisfying, we reached that milestone a couple of weeks ago - although not as impressive as you guys since we only did about 30,000 ourselves ;)

Just out of curiosity, do you actually manage 529 miles with still over a quarter of the tank full? If so, very impressive and dying to find out what I'm doing wrong with our TDI :)
I really ought to check how many miles I'm doing per tank, must admit that it's something I don't normally do. I remember as a child when my Dad filled his car up he would always get a little note book out before driving away from the pump to record everything! The miles were zero'd at some point, but not when I last filled up. Will let you know if I achieve outstanding fuel consumption;)

I've been wandering, what's the purpose of the first top window in the middle of the cluster?
System check/issues, open doors, low fuel warning, all come up on the bottom display. What is that for?

It tells you the system is OK, not sure if it does anything else, @timmus will most likely have an idea.

This thread gives a good overview of the features of DIS and what you’ll see in the display...
The DIS screen also allows you to browse your telephone’s contact list, if you have the other required hardware. There are a few photos of DIS-based phone integration here...

Cheers,

Tom

I've been using www.fuelly.com for a few years, a bit of a bore to do but it provides useful infomation.
