Today my wiper motor died. In the rain. On the M25.

Thankfully I could take the next turning off and get back home.
I tested the fuse and checked physically and both are fine so I assume I need a new motor.
Anything I should be looking for in a replacement?
The prices I’ve found range widely.

If the second earth or even a jump lead gets the wipers working again, then the issue is that the earth connection in the wiring loom for the wipers has failed. This earths at the same point as the left headlight is earthed, but a more common failure is due to water getting into the wiring plug on the wiper motor. This then corrodes the lowest connection which just happens to be the earth. If so the corrosion can normally be cleaned off and a smear of dielectric grease applied to the edges of the plug as it fits into the loom to help seal out more water.
 
I had this happen a few days ago. Jump leads clamped onto the motor housing and the starter motor stabilising rod got the wiper moving again suggesting that it was the bad earth. New earth cable from motor casing bolt to alternator belt tensioner bolt sorted it out. (ps. ignore the headline appearing on the link below, it does link to the correct wiper earth post though).

Urge you to check the smaller shaft as both of mine have been seized they are free to rotate as an undriven shaft normally!
May need to remove wiper arms first.

Better to check the integrity of the wiper loom. The earth point comes from the same point as the left hand headlight is earthed. The wiring plug sits in a bad place ans as such does get wet. The earth pin is the lowest in the plug and if standing water that is the contact that will fail first. So do not be fooled into a false sense of security as the next to corrode will be the live feeds for the wiper. Remove, clean, protect and reconnect.
