Tolls in Austria - FYI

Last week an Independent newspaper journalist was writing about getting a ticket in Austria for not having a motorway toll sticker - he was unaware it was needed. This week he continues with emails from readers who knew there were tolls but expected toll booths. There weren't any but there were police pulling loads of foreigners over and demanding 120 Euro as a fine. Nice welcome to tourists.

Reminds me of my saga in getting a German emissions permit.

I Drove through last week.
All those mirrors you see above the Motorway are to check your windscreen to see if you have a Vignette on there.
Same applies for Hungary and Romania, bit of a cheek as they still charge even if you don't use the motorway

If people can't do the research before they go as to what is required in another country then I have little sympathy. Everyone has access to a computer and its easy enough to search the web. Also all the autobahns heading for Austria sell the vignettes at the service stations well in advance of reaching the border. Of course this presumably isn't just about UK drivers but also all the eastern europeans drivers and Russians who probably think the police are like they are in their own countries, easily bribed. And as for it being a journo on the Independant, serves the him right, only one step removed from the holier than thou Guardian and BBC.

I was once fined on the spot in France for not stopping 'dead' at a road junction. The police shouldn't have done so because we owned local property, so they should have taken me to court. Could I make a complaint against the police? My French neighbours told me that you should never pay on-the-spot fines anyway as the money would go straight into their back pocket!

"Italy's a toll booth on exit system isn't it? I've driven there twice this year and that was my experience......"

Can't remember, we went through that many countries, and it was years back... Didn't pay for anything.

Don't know. In-laws have property out there. We've been visiting for years, and while we observe all the relevant laws etc, none of us have ever been stopped.

Austria has plenty of signs before you enter the country saying you must buy a vignette, They usually dispatch a motorbike to charge you, after all its easy money
