TomTom GPS software question...

Anyone using TomTom software? The new version with the 3-D mapping... I'm using Pocket Co-pilot software that came with my Compaq navigation Navman sleeve... it has been upgraded, but I need to pay £99 for the latest version... so I may as well get TomTom with 3D since mine does not do 3D...

BUT, my question: does TomTom read actual street names and locations? Eg "Turn left ahead on Brighton road B2610 and then make a sharp right on High street A234" as mine does? Or does it only say: "Turn left ahead and then make a sharp right"? Makes quite a difference believe me...

Its only the generic "turn left / turn right" personally i don`t use the 3d map as the screen isn`t really big enough to make it work. Save the Pennies as i really don`t think they are worth it, just go and join a games clan and download for free, if you want i can send you a copy of mine in the post "as a back up of course"!!!

hehehe... thanks... don't worry.... mine reads as described... so I will stick with it and pay the £99 to get the latest UK map so that it does not send me around roundabouts that don't exist!

If you select someone in your Contacts as destination the Software does the neatest thing in that as you approach their house the voice says: "Approaching Jon Od's house at 123 Tom street"!!! hehehe and just for that I shall keep it! But thanks for the "back-up"!

Johann, seems like you've already made up your mind, but just FYI I can add the following.
TomTom only _speaks_ with general directions, but _on screen_ you have the option to show all kind of info, including the name of the road your currently on, or the name of the next road/highway.
The 3d view is great. And if you feel like you don't see enough, like Jon, you can easily zoom out to a higher point of view. I feel it adds to the sense of where you are and where you are going.
Moreover, TomTom is so popular that more free add-ons exist. Like POI (point of interest) programs with 'databases' that can keep track of anything you can think of.
And then there is the map issue: accuracy and size. Might save on additional memory cards. Might be faster to calculate your route.

I returned my TomTom and PDA to my mother after pre-installing it in my A2, but if I had to choose for myself, I'd go for TomTom without a hint of doubt.

thanks swiv... but i can do all that on the pocket co-pilot too... apart form the 3D... AND it reads the road names and numbers... so to just get 3D i'm not changing...

http://www.pocketpcmag.com/awards/category.asp?catid=43#GPSSoftware tells who won best sat nav award for 3 rd year running and it was not TomTom... it was Co-pilot...
