I have to say, I've heard that the Halfords Adanced 150 or 200 piece tool sets are amazing value considering they have the same lifetime warranty that Snap-on et al have - and especially when they have a sale on like they do now!

If I was just starting out and I wanted to buy new then without a doubt this is where my money would be spent.

I'm another Halfords Advanced fan: I've watched other people's Snap On gear fail in ways it absolutley should not, whilst the BS free Halfords stuff just quietly gets on with it.

I'll add one: ratchet spanner set, but brace yourself, not the Halfords ones! They are the only thing so far I've really not liked: very clunky. Draper do a premuim range and I seem to remember their ratchet spanner set is much slimmer for each size.

Oh: spring compressors. If you need these (and if you have an A2 ... you will), you really, really need these.

The magnet on a flexi stick was a great tip: mine's just a magnet on a bit of flexi plastic rod, didn't have one for years but oh my word, as that ever paid for itself. Mine came from the Frosts catalogue.

BTW, my timing belt kit was from eBay. You need the main kit and then either get, or make sure it comes with, a pin spanner. Quality was excellent despite being un-branded.

Also, really like Teng tools as well.
 
Also think at the rate your garage is ripping you off you could by a solid gold set of tools... It may be worth trying to get our opinion if you need work done, we may be able to tell you what is involved or even recommend a garage to you. Have a look at the manual above - obviously you select A2 and you will see what your garage has charged for ( or claimed to have done ).

When buying tools always buy the best you can AFFORD at the time. Go for an established recognised brand, obviously avoid the "chocolate and chewing gum brigade". I think now could well be one of the best times to invest in updated or even first time tooling as all companies will be trying hard to shift stock. Sometimes buying a complete set of something e.g. spanners is not a good idea as the individual ones may work out cheaper plus you only buy the sizes you need.
 
Another vote for Halfords Advanced from me. I have a 1/4 & 3/8 socket set from the days when it was their Professional, rather than Advanced, range and it's still going strong over 20 years later. I've also got one of their Posidrive screwdrivers, which is my favourite!

Another thing I find very useful is a set of long handled, ball ended Allen keys (I think mine came as an impulse buy from Aldi but have been very good).

Telescopic magnetic pickup tool is brilliant when you drop stuff ( also couldn't have done the valve shims on my last motorbike without it!)

LED headtorch to see what you're doing and digital camera (or phone these days) to record how things go back together!

Found a bloke near me selling a 200pc Advanced set for £150, trying to get him down to £120, just downloaded a workshop manual, my first job is removing the turbo, as Halfrauds said it had blown, the spindle was loose apparently, nothing like jumping in the deep end.....lol

I need these clamps according to the manual, dont suppose you can point me in the right direction my good man?

Those tools are for clamping off coolant hoses, they are available on ebay.

Not sure why you need them as the turbo is all air not coolant.
What you would be better getting is a pair of the pliers to fit and remove the very strong spring clips on the pipes. As picture below.

You will save a lot of time and potentially teeth by investing in a pair as nearly every single hose clip ( at least when original ) need these pliers.

Before you go all in and remove the turbo you can remove the air inlet pipe completely and see the compressor turbine. You can then reach in and see how much movement there is. If the turbo has to come out then you have already removed the inlet side.
 
OK now I see. Do you have an AMF, BHC or ATL engine. I think from your profile and age of the car you will have an AMF engine. The EGR is not water cooled on the AMF so clamps not needed. The sections in the manual are split into the engine types if you check you will see removing engine code AMF then further down removing BHC and ATL. Hope that clears it up for you.

As i drained almost 7 litres of oil from my car yesterday, am i right in thinking this could be the reason why my car blowing out smoke, and my turbo, and pipes may well be clogged up with oil?

That much oil lucky the engine did not blow. Yes that certainly would explain the smoke and several other issues. What doe the end of your dipstick look like. Please post a picture. I suspect the end has broken off and someone has kept adding oil until the stump left is submerged in oil... Your friend Paul prints some lovely 3D replacement ends assuming that is what you need. If the dipstick is intact and it was indeed just oil and not oil/water coming out then someone should have gone to specsavers...LOL. Change the oil, oil filter and the air filter. If there is oil visible in any of the air pipework then clean that out also.

Spot on mate, my dipstick is missing most of the end, i replaced oil filter yesterday, air filter, which was a K&N) so, i just washed it, got fuel filter to do, cabin filter, poured in 4.5 litres of Quantum 5x30 Fully synthestic longlife today, havent started her yet, as kids driving me mental, so, fingers crossed, once its all cleaned up, it will be happy days.

Just. to update, i removed all pipe work leading to the turbo, all caked in oil, all de gunked now, but, the best news is that the turbo looks clean, and is stable, so, halfords were talking absolute s**te, came across broken clips, and brackets, but, happy in one way, but disappointed in Halfords, and i trod on my phone, cracked the screen, mixed emotions today. Pic of turbo attached, what you reckon?
