Tow Bar Fitting..How To

Hi folks recently got hold of another factory towbar, but the removable hitch had never been removed so was solid. The hitch release could be pulled out but wouldn't twist round to the red marks where the hitch will release. I turned the towbar upside down and filled the inside of the hitch with plusgas through the little hole in the underside, after a week the penetrating oil did the trick and the release turned easily, a few taps with a wooden mallet and it was out. It does need a good clean up though!

So, unless you can turn your release fully into the red, the hitch won't come out. Hope that helps, cheers

more towbar stuff that might be useful to someone, just got hold of a pretty much as new hitch via ebay, the same hitch was used on A3 and A4 - i searched 'Audi detachable hitch' and a couple popped up - one rough, this one good. it also came with Audi hitch instructions which i've not seen before. cheers

Hi, I was wondering if the famous brackets were ever copied/fabricated? I have a towbar that includes everything but those two brackets. I could machine some up in aluminium if someone has the brackets spare to send while I reverse engineer them. Would only take a couple of days to take the dimensions off them...

Yep. That is spot on. Paul can make them up for you. I passed on some dimensions when I had the original brackets some years back and Paul (the genius that he is) fabbed up copies so that we can keep fitting towbars.

Drop him a line and he can sort you out.

Thanks for the info. I managed to find a 3D model online for them and made them up at work from some scrap aluminium. Worked a treat and fitted everything up today. Bring on biking tomorrow!

Having had a pair of the OE brackets, the ones pictured here look far better engineered.

Only one thing though, the OE version had an oval hole to allow for slight fitting tolerances. In an ideal world, these milled ones look so much better though and will do the job nicely, not that they’re needed for such a small load as a bicycle carrier.

Hello friends, I just found a factory mount for my a2 1.4 2001, they have not removed it yet, I am choosing about the original mounts that are so difficult to find but I can't find any photo to send to the seller.
