Tow Bar Fitting..How To

Hi Pete,

Although as I've said previously, I've been using the towing bar without the recessed brackets, I will be keeping hold of them in case I start pulling heavier items than a bike rack. I'm sure however, if I get them to our own Depronman, he can fabricate a good facsimile for you or others in the future, as they are a very rare part.

Im in desperated of a towbar, but having only had my car for 2 weeks now and and, and,(I say very sadly) I need a new dmf & clutch...It will be done in about a weeks time by Mark-Foreman from Cleethorpes Audi-Vw Centre, with maybe His dad helping....I didn't realise how rare these bars are,and expensive !....This is a great thread btw and very helpful to us oap,s..lol...(well some of us im sure)..

Al-ko should be able to supply these. Bertelsmann can supply looms. They are also still available from Audi dealers, albeit at €120 or so for the pair.

I would say that they are a must. Remember this is aluminium. The variation in the nose pressure while driving may result in Aluminium fatigue at the other mounting points.

Yes they are a MUST if you dont you are a total muppet sorry but without them you are asking for trouble..
Do it right as Audi intended..

Audi also used 16 screws to hold on a inner door trim that weighs about 800gramms, just because Audi do it doesn't mean its necessary.

I'm not convinced that the brackets are necessary - the load they bear is tangential to the direction of the force and it's acting on a thin section of the chassis leg, around 3mm thick, which has been weakened by drilling a large hole and 3 smaller holes in close proximity.

The vast majority of the load is taken by the 6 screws that go into the end of the chassis and are high tensile coated steel. although I've not towed a caravan or anything similar, I'd be confident that I could without the bracket cups installed. I don't consider my experience with A2s over the last 16 years would allow me to be a muppet.

Audi came up with some strange engineering solutions for the A2 and this is just one of the lesser known examples. The inner door panel as Steve mentions above is a better example.

Hi Guys,
I have just this week fitted a second hand tow bar sold to me by my new friend Tony, AKA Snydersmuncher93.
I was lucky enough to have all the parts including the little brackets that fit in the chassis.

The hardest part of the whole job is getting the rear bumper off and deciding which of the many screws to undo to achieve this.
Once that is done its a piece of cake to fit the bar.
As for the chassis brackets you pays your money and takes your choice, but for all the time and effort it took ( 10 mins per side )
I would and have fitted them.
When it stops raining up here I will post a couple of pictures, but the ones at the start of this thread are as good as any you will
find and are most helpfull.

Hi

If you could have these brackets re fabricated for me and other members that would be brilliant

Definitely for me please let me know a price and as and when

Thanks

Pete

I think the brackets are important.

It's all about the nose weight. The 6 (or is it 8?) bolts which hold are used where the main beam fits are there for pulling the trailer. They do the job fine.
As soon as there is some nose weight on the ball these bolts in there relative proximity could become a pivot point.
The brackets hold those bars in place to prevent this. They don't need to be strong. Levers etc.

Hi Bret, I'm after a loom. Bertelsmann? Not come across this before. Can you give me some pointers, google hasn't helped me yet.

With the maximum braked capacity being 1000kg, I wouldn't expect a nose weight in excess of 50kg to be permissible. Certainly the new car I've ordered can't take more than that, but it can pull 1400kg.

With such a low nose weight, you'd be fine without brackets. However, it's your call.

ive been in engineering all my life and i cant believe some people think half a job will do
the long solid bars that go through the chassis to meet up with these brackets and bolts do many things to add to the strength of the tow bracket
the small bolts on the flanges into aluminum are week on their own
you are pulling a weight and road conditions force a trailer up and down it will fail eventually without them
oh dear please dont leave out the brackets
good luck

i think its 6 small bolts and what you are saying above is totally correct

....Off topic sort of, but I was amazed how little holds my Trailer on my 1500cc Vulcan....The same engineering firm also makes the Trailers..It tows well even with a full load..o_O
