Transmission Noise

Just got my car back from the dealer who kept it for 8 days (!) to fix a whining noise from the transmission. They have fitted two new gearbox bearings and replaced the gear linkage but I can still hear the noise (and so can my wife who isn't usually sensitive to these things). The problem is definitely not as bad as it was but it is still there at lower volume.

I need to do some more tests (trailing throttle, clutch in/out etc.) to try to isolate the noise but my inclination is to take the car back. I've owned it from new (54 plate TDI 90 SE) and have only done 27,000 miles.

Or am I just being hyper-critical: is a certain level of transmission noise a 'feature' of the A2?

I had problems with what could be described as a "whirring" sound from around 2000 rpm mainly louder in second gear. I was in warranty and had the gearbox replaced and all has been well since. It was difficult with the first technician but the Senior Technician could hear it. There are threads on the site (do a search) that will give details.

Mine's a 54 plate 1.4 petrol. Did the tests to differentiate from gearbox and engine, so not sure about Turbo sound.

If its still in warranty Yossarian get it sorted, they have given it a go with repair but if you are not happy and the sound is still there, get it replaced.

Be quite specific with your request to them as you will be the one left with the problem at the end of the day.
