Tuning TDI re engine temp

For those of you that have tuned your TDI’s (75 & 90) do your engines run hotter? I appreciate the gauge is not a good indicator being magnetised at 90 degrees so those of you with colour DIS would be able to advise unless you have another way to check temperature?

Reading around the death pipe for FSI’s previously it occurred to me that the TDI’s may run hotter so when I eventually find a second A2 (of suitable condition) to add to the stable I’d possibly want a TDI and get it tuned. Has anyone added a larger intercooler to cope with the higher temperature if it indeed runs hotter.

I’ve read Timmus’ TDI 120 thread and that’s far more extensive than I’d do so just wanted to know what people have experienced/done.

The TDis generally run cool, the radiator is more than sufficient for even a tuned TDi in the hottest of weather

Yep sorry didn’t think that one through in respect of the intercooler. Radiator is sufficient then very good.

I’ll keep an eye out for a decent TDI to add to the FSI and one day I’ll have one of each. ?

I monitored the engine temp using vcds when I was developing my own remap some heaters ago now. It was one of many things to keep an eye on after every remap tweak
I saw no significant rise in engine temp pre and post remap. A couple of degrees increase at most but once the thermostat opens then constant temp was maintained
You do get a peak just before the stat opens but this was the same pre and post remap all be it a degree or so higher before the stat opened
I have not repeated the test since upgrading to a gates stat from the ecp circoil stat but the engine reaches 90 deg noticeably quicker with the gates stat in use

Cheers. Paul

I think, as others have already mentioned, that the TDI has ample cooling. I monitored mine yesterday afternoon, as I have installed a lower grill block, and the coolant temp reached a max of 90C (when stopped after going up a longish hill), but was otherwise reading 87 or 88C. This was despite the outside temp being between 28 and 30C. I suspect the cooling system was designed to cope with driving up a Spanish mountain in 40C heat, so the car is more than able to cool itself effectively in our climate.

Is there a different between the radiator between the models as they seem to look quite similar.

No, they are all the same, its just the couplings at the inlet and outlet that changes dependant on model.

What I thought, so the radiator is setup for the much or higher heat output petrols.
