turbo failure...

Moderate Drivung in 3rd gear then a huge whistle noise, no power and whine from engine.

Going to my local audi specialist tomorrow, question I have my engine is re mapped by stealth, so will a new turbo be ok just to bolt on ?

Had a quick look on Ebay some on their around £195.

Thanks Andrew

depends if the engine as ingested any parts of the blown turbo (this is highly likely), if so severe engine damage is very likely

Sorry for the bad news

There have been few members done it - is it a whistle sound etc. or did it just sound like aircon on overcharge? As if the latter it could be that a hose came off - had one of mine give up at the lip and it slipped away from the clip with the biting bit of the hose deteriorated.

Just a loud whistle noise when it happened, now when driving it a whine noise from engine.

Engine starts fine and works (ok) just no power particularly in low gears 5th and 6th it goes ok.

Think I can smell oil as well.

I had a brand new Seat Arosa TDI with AMF and the turbo journal bearings let go at 237 miles from new. The dealer fitted a new turbo, changed the oil and filter and it was still fine when I sold it 189,000 miles later (20 oil changes later).
Remember on the compressor side, there is the intercooler in the way of all the broken bits of turbo plus a few feet of big bore hose. The exhaust side should be less of an issue from the point of view of metal ingestion but EGR may be a route back in too maybe.
Hoping it’s just a hose.

Matt,

Cheers for that maybe some hope then I'll post update as soon as I know.
Thanks Andy

My ATL turbo gave up with a bang under full power at 200k. No bits in engine, ok at 245k.
My AMF like BiggDogg gave up at 200 odd from new (2 days old). that was sold @ 180k on about 9 oil changes without any issues.
So i think metal bits in engine is not as likely as some mechanics make.
Good luck

Thinking ahead...anyone done a different engine transplant?
Andrew - mine did the same 3 months ago with 227k on the clock. I managed to get a very good engine/gearbox/turbo with half the mileage( confirmed with papers, running with video and mileage confirmed etc off a guy who’s A2 was damaged underneath and subsequently scrapped. So transplanted the turbo from that one to my car - good as gold again- with delivery cost me £650. Plan is to at some point when needed to swap the engine after a complete rebuild. I did all the work myself and Offcourse had to get gaskets etc from audi to do the job. Don’t give up on your car.

This is what happened to Tank last year when the turbo let go when pulling away from traffic lights, so metal ingress is not out of the question, but it is the worst case scenario. WOM carried out a like for like ATL transplant and installed a re-worked turbo and oil pump/chain replacement at the same time.
Cost wise, it wasn't economically viable, but then not much work will work out as viable on these 15-20 year old cars now. I made the decision to invest a considerable sum of money back into Tank, on the basis that if the car lasted me another 10 years, it was very economical motoring and there's simply nothing else on the market which does the same as a good A2 TDi, with such character and charm.

Hmm, this has got me thinking. My turbo (atl) whistles quite loudly at low rev full boost. Then at higher revs when the vanes adjust to reduce the boost the whistling goes away. I'm pretty sure there are no leaks in the system and I have a boost gauge so I can see that everything is happening as it should. I've always regarded this whistle as a comfort that the variable vanes are working. Did anyone on here who's turbo's have failed get any audible warning sign? My turbo has whistled like this for the last 10k miles. Car only done 110k but came with no history. Shame the turbo is so hard to get to else I would have whipped it out and replaced the innards for £100. Should I be worried?

Every 90 I've owned/driven has had an audible whistle on acceleration. I assumed this was as it should be.
I drove a couple of friends in my car last summer; they were convinced we were being followed, at distance, by an emergency services vehicle with the siren on

PS my son's friend's father had an A6 Allroad; my son said that whistled all the time also

Ok thanks for that. Mind at rest again! Back to thread.

I think turbo life has a lot to do with oil change intervals. There are no ball bearings in these turbos, the bearing is a floating oil type. Hence if the oil is old / thick / contaminated then the turbo spinning so fast is going to be the first to suffer.

With open windows at low speed, and under acceleration, I can also hear some whistlesound when turbo sucks air.

Agree with oil intervals and not letting the turbo get clogged on low rpm/cold driving. Also replace air filters.

My turbo outside is full of oil, and I refill 0,3-0,5l between every 15000km. Do not think the low oil alarm would have go off if I did not top up. Has been like that for a long time, and sometimes you just need to follow «if it aint broken, dont fix it»

Thanks all for the updates and comments.
Can now confirm the turbo has gone.

My Audi specialist had sourced a re con turbo from AET, £450 plus fitting.

I just cant part from the car just something about it makes me smile. I couldn't resist asking the specialist about a full new exhaust system.

Hes quoting me, my xmas present to myself.
Update you all.
