turbo failure...

Hmm, this has got me thinking. My turbo (atl) whistles quite loudly at low rev full boost. Then at higher revs when the vanes adjust to reduce the boost the whistling goes away. I'm pretty sure there are no leaks in the system and I have a boost gauge so I can see that everything is happening as it should. I've always regarded this whistle as a comfort that the variable vanes are working. Did anyone on here who's turbo's have failed get any audible warning sign? My turbo has whistled like this for the last 10k miles. Car only done 110k but came with no history. Shame the turbo is so hard to get to else I would have whipped it out and replaced the innards for £100. Should I be worried?

yes mine became more audible towards the end, then the sudden little oil leak( first oil leak in 227k miles) and then on a long trip home constant whistling when pushing above 65mph and loss of power. Immediately knew turbo had gone. Engine was fine though. Still limped home another 40 miles or so.

Update...
Turbo now on but another problem.

Garage said now no turbo power, then suddenly a surge of power.
Hes puzzelled.

Any opinions anyone?

that sounds like VGT is not working correctly and works more like standard tdi 75, without the varied geometry - it is fun, that turbo punch.

Not sure if it is controlled by a vacuum line in tdi90 - i'm sure someone more knowledgeable can advise.

Have you taken your car to the right place? Is the vacuum line connected? You could probably have got a new turbo from Turbo Dynamics for not much more than your s/h example.

Hi Andrew,

You have a non-standard ECU map, and presumably the running map was tailored to your specific engine.
I guess it could be that the map is now not suitable for the new build!

I'd also echo Rab's concerns about your workshop choice should they be struggling to troubleshoot this type of issue, but that doesn't help you really.
I'd expect the organisation to have the ability to inspect the performace from the various sensor outputs using scopes or data-logging equipment, and be able to understand if there is an issue with air or fuel delivery, or if the new turbo isn't working as it should because it's faulty.
If there are no fault codes being logged that is a good sign there isn't an installation issue.

Presumably you had been advised by this workshop that the turbo failure had not caused any additional engine issues, but did they actually advise what was wrong with the original turbo?
My reason for asking is this:
Your description of the fault isn't something that would usually be attributed to a turbocharger failure.
The whistling noise indicates the compressor is providing boost, but that boost pressure is escaping to atmosphere.
As the compressor side of the turbo is driven by a common shaft, then a full on failure would seem unlikely.
That then leads to the fault being the boost pipework (or intercooler) and not the turbocharger itself.
Of course, your turbocharger might have been about to disintigrate and was caught just before it caused catastrophic damage.

I should make sure the workshop understand you have a non-standard ECU map, and I trust the map you are running is a re-write of your original map and not something you've downloaded, as there are different ECU types, and each is written slightly differently depending on the type fitted to your car.
You may find that the car drives exactly as it did prior to you problem, and this is just a consequence of your re-map.

Sorry this isn't going as smoothly as it should, and hopefully there'll be a positive outcome for you soon.

Cheers
Jeff

Hi

Had a re map by stealth.
Audi VW specialist have confirmed that bolting on a same spec turbo (non enhanced) will have no effect on the re map.

No fault codes.
No faults on any pipe work
Also confirmed 2 blades were gone on turbo once inspected.

He also said the EGR valve was full of come and has been cleaned out.

Still waiting to hear of the next steps.
Thanks for your input.
Cheers andy.

I Got Mixed up on what the carbon build up was, been going to this garage for years never had any issues with any of his work.

I'll update once all sorted.
Thanks.
