Two types of grill flaps bolts

Evening all, looking for info on the two bolts that bolt the service flap onto the bonnet.

I have a bonnet with no grill at all. It has holes for the two flap bolts - but no captive nuts.

My current bonnet has the smooth flap and the bolts go through the square profile bar into the bonnet and screw into what looks like captive nuts.

So question is how to attach my smooth grill to the bonnet with no nuts?

If I remember correctly the smooth grille has 2 longer M6 bolts fitted from the front. The slatted grille has 2 shorter M5 bolts fitted from the rear. Do not remember any captive nuts on the bar but thought there was something on the bonnet itself.

That's my recollection from when I did mine. I don't recall any captive nuts. I either used locking nuts (with nylon inserts) or locking washer. I could check but maybe not til tomorrow.

There are "early" and "late" variants - probably corresponding to smooth vs ridged panels - as Graham @audifan has stated above. On my "early" car I used stainless M6 x 20 (I think) hex-socket bolts to fit the smooth replacement "grille" to the bonnet on my 02 project car - from memory they threaded straight into an M6 (threaded?) hole in what I assume is the lightweight crash bar that the access panel hinges on, maybe through holes in the bonnet skin. A previous owner had swapped on a ridged panel, but from memory this was a bit of a lashup with an M5 nut / bolt combo going through the same holes in the opposite direction to hold it in place. The bolts in question are visible directly below the bonnet release handle on either side. Quick photo saves several thousand words.

and here are the 7zap details confirming the switch over from front to rear-mounted bolts and different dimensions.

Thank you, here is the bonnet for the smooth grill, showing the captive nut things.

My new bonnet doesn't have these though and I want to fit the smooth grill to it. So is the bonnet missing something or is case of new slatted flap bolts the other way so bonnets didn't have the nuts on the inside?

In post 5 above you can see my bonnet with smooth flap has the nuts attached to the bonnet, on the bonnet I have here there are clearly non. So is there two type of bonnet for the a2? Grill dependent or can I get these nuts from somewhere. All a bit odd.

Good question and possibly two answers. Either a later bonnet was produced for the slatted grille that did not need the "nuts" , or someone has removed them from your bonnet.

So for your problem either look for the genuine "nuts" although no part number listed for them, or fit a "T" socket to receive the bolts.

Something like this, just work out the length required as they are bling and not through sockets.

Thanks graham, this is a good idea. His will be my solution.

Looking closely at my "new" bonnet, it doesn't look like anything been removed I.e no marks or evidence of drilling etc.

Maybe someone can be bothered to take a peak at their 04 05 bonnet?

Just checked and only one part number for the bonnet for all car years. So would say those "nuts" have been removed from your bonnet.

After further investigation it looks like those nuts do have a part number but can not verify from a picture...

N90817901 rivetted cap nut x2 M6x3,5-6 and are by name rivetted onto the bonnet.

And looks like N90817901 has been replaced by N90817902 according to Deutsche Auto Parts.

Here's my smooth grill fitted to a 2004 car that has a slatted grill.

You can see the captive nut as well as my nut. So the bolt must have been thinner such so it went through the captive nut but I was mistaken in thinking the bolt was reversed.
