Tyres - it never used to be this difficult!

When I had my Escort, back in the 80s., if you needed tyres, you went to a tyre place, told a grumpy bloke that you needed x amount of tyres and he sorted it out.

After my failed attempt at buying tyres for Mabel via Blackcircles, I ended up buying a set of alloys that had tyres.

A couple of weeks ago, Barney got a puncture and all are really low, so I need to get four new tyres. I went online to look and all places seemed as though you had to order. In the end, I stupidly decided to try Blackcircles again. I ordered, set fitting for a different place than I tried last time and was due to go in tomorrow to have them fitted.

I get an email this afternoon, saying ever so sorry, but the tyres haven't been delivered and can i do 13th Nov ( no, as I'm at work). I don't know why they get such good reviews - they are utterly useless.

So I've asked for my money back. Can anyone recommend a proper tyre company please?
Thank you

Sometimes it's easier going to slo-fit etc. They are not as good on price but if they are in stock you are good to go.

What brand of tyre does Barney have at the moment? How much tread do they have left? What tyres are you looking to buy?

If you have premium tyres with decent tread remaining, it's worth getting the tyres refitted. At the other end of the spectrum, cheap Chinese tyres from a brand you've never heard of most definitely aren't. Tyre dealers who keep premium brands in stock are very pricey, compared to online sellers.

It's best in general to avoid companies like Blackcircles, because they don't stock any tyres at all, and because they farm out the fitting to 3rd parties who resent that they make next to nothing from the deal.

@Teresa I was surprised recently to find that Halfords offered good prices: not in store, but online, and then fitted in one of their stores.
They weren’t as handy as a normal independent: I had to make an appointment and leave the car with them, but there is a Halfords only about a mile from my home and so it was no great hardship to drop the car, then go back later to collect.

ATS Euromaster are a good traditional tyre distributor / fitter. Check their website and you'll be able to see what tyres they have available in Norwich right now:

Is that an actual company, or do you mean fast fit (sorry if I'm being dense - I think I last bought tyres in 1989!)
Thank you

Just a thought Teresa, i get mine from Camskil ( i use them a lot ) i choose the tyre i want - very good price delivered to your home. Try to combine it with getting the wheels refurbished so the tyres will be put on as part of the refurb process for free. Works for me otherwise my local place wants £20 per tyre fitted.

I've never heard of the names to be honest and they are all right on the limit. There are 3 different sizes on there at the moment ?. I don't need anything too fancy as I only use him for work. At the moment I'm having to use Mabel for work and I know I'll start to pay for that soon (will take her for a proper run at the weekend)

Hi Teresa

I use an omline company called camskill you choose your type of tyre you need ie summer, winter, or all season, select the tyre size and choose which brand you want to buy.

All new tyres come with a wet grip rating A-G, A being the best and Fuel efficient rating A-G ,A being the best, they also tell you about road noise in dbells, ranging from a low 67db up to 74 db I think.

They are very low priced and offer free delivery, i usually go to Just Tyres to get them fitted which is usually £10-£15 each inc balance

I buy all my tyres from them.

Hope this helps!

Ah, it's ok, I can't easily do that. I managed to get the flat tyre off and shoved in the car, but I don't have any way of keeping the car off the ground if I take all the wheels off and they are really heavy - I'd really struggle to get them off and into Mabel to take them anywhere. I only managed to get the flat wheel undone by balancing on top if the wheel nut undoer (sorry - really busy week at work and I can't remember the proper name) and bobbing up and down

I can also recommend camskill for the tyre supplies - they have been very good in the last couple of years for having deals on Uniroyal Rainsport 3s that I have on two of my cars (that are indeed good on wet roads that we have here in Central Scotland!). Was generally pleased with Mytyres online before that but with the A2 tyre sizes Camskill were around 10 or more quid cheaper for the same thing when I was looking. On Ebay it was the Tayat tyre store that I got a decent price from most recently (with an additional 10% off through completesavings.co.uk) - in all cases delivered direct to my place and then the garage that I use for my car work put them on the rims (I found them originally as a mytyres fitting agent and then realised they were proper car engineers as well).

>I've not heard of Costco, so it may not have reached Norwich

Crikey, Teresa - that's telling us something about East Anglia.. there are people in Tayside who have heard of Costco - exactly when in the 1950s are you posting from?

You need a telescopic tyre wrench:

Thanks Steve - yes, the earliest they can do is Monday sadly

I have found Halfords good also. Just do some shopping around for a real place and prepare to barter, they need the business and if you say you have found cheaper elsewhere they can often be accommodating. HotUKDeals will also give you leads to good tyre prices if you have time to wait. Failing that just buy some extra alloys as you did previously, it's the simplest way if anyone has some going spare and you get another set for when you need tyres next time. I usually keep a Summer and Winter set.

Thank you -.i'm at work during the week so it's really tricky to have anything delivered. I really need to have somewhere that I can just take it and they sort it. I'm half thinking of putting the flat back on, ringing the RAC and letting them take it somewhere
