Unable to connect to ABS module/Steering

Morning good folks, I have recently aquired a tdi and it has both the ABS light and failed power steering(amber steering light on dash), when trying to connect to the abs module it says unable to connect...I am hoping that the two are connected, but even the garage are struggling to get any kind of connection via their Snap On code reader. I have noticed that somebody has replaced the abs loom in the past, could this be something to do with it? Maybe an incorrect loom and thus throwing the power steering off too??? It won't even show any errors on the steering fault either....thanks for your time and answers.

A loom change could be the issue. Why was it changed, if wire damage there may be more and has it been wired and properly insulated afterwards. Have you checked both ABS looms completely in the front wheel wells? I am assuming you bought the car with the warning lights on and not just happened? Have you tried the "master reset" to see if that helps, may help the computer but if physical damage then won't help.

Bit of a combo on this one, the previous owner offered it to me as a breaker as it was in his way on the drive...worked perfectly when it parked up, had a totally flat battery, replaced battery and when it started the dash lit up.
I've had a good look round it, and the passenger abs loom has been changed, hence the insulation tape on the loom, will be removing the tape to see what lies beneath....unfortunately I can only dip in and out on this one as I have too much on to set all my time to it...
