Undertray; what undertray?

Hi

I note from various threads that mention is made of the A2 having an engine 'undertray'. Checking over my recently acquired TDI version I find that I do not have one!

Should there be one, is it necessary and, if so, where can I get one from (other than an Audi dealership)?

Cheers

Hi martin j, welcome to the A2oc.
Yes, your car should have an undertray - there is a pic and diagram in the attached link on replacing the air filter - http://audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?t=58147
The tray keeps the engine bay cleaner, reduces engine noise and improves the aerodynamics of the car.

As far as parts go, if you don't want to pay main dealer prices its just a case of checking e.bay and the scrap yards for cars being broken.

The undertray is very necessary, and although you're not the first person to find it missing, you should replace it.

The undertray (more correctly called the noise insulation) can only be got through a dealer and costs around £80. It's purposes are many: it serves to cut down on transmitted road noise both from the engine outwards and also from the outside in (although this is minimal). It also protects the engine, gearbox, electrics and piping from dirt, stones and water. The tray also locks into the bottom of the front bumper to increase rigidity and make the entire front end stronger and more able to take knocks. The streamlinging is also improved with it in place.

Get one ordered up asap and you'll also need the 2 bolts and 12(?) torx screws to fix it in place.

Cheers,

Mike
