@Mr Angry at the end of the thick red and black wires is just the dashcam’s USB adapter. Ie I am just branching of power to an USB adapter (that converts 12V to 5V), and connects the USB cable to that adapter. The other end of the USB cable is thereafter pulled to the dashcam

Check the usb cigarette adaptor definitely has a 5v step down or buck function and that’s what your dash cam needs.

I borrowed a 5v usb one for my previous dash cam and it turned out to only need 3.3v and I’d cut off the adaptor without checking.

Hence why it was my former dashcam... the magic smoke appeared pretty quickly.
