Urgent wiper motor help!

Hi Darren,

I’m currently in Central Europe, but will be driving home to the Lancaster area on Wednesday and passing within a stone’s throw of your place.

I’m well known for my work on A2s, especially their electrics. You can get a good idea of the role I play within the community by following this link…

Unfortunately, other than my Audi diagnostics laptop, I don’t have any tools with me. However, using whatever basic tools you might have, I’d hope to be able to fashion something that works, even if it’s just a temporary measure.

I appreciate that you’d ideally like the issue to be addressed today and that my offer doesn’t allow for this. However, if a Wednesday visit is a decent alternative, I’m sure I can build a stopover in Tamworth into my drive home.

All the best,

Tom (Timmus)

Does this help?
Just loop one wire around the wiper motor through a the screw hole and twist tightly then attach the other end to a nearby earthed bolt. There are quite a few.
That does help! I have an idea of how it can be done!! Thanks!! That really helps!! 🙂

hi,
I would like to add a couple of photos of the halfords ground cable i fitted to my car. Just for interest.

Hello Tom (Timmus)

I do know of you!! 🙂 I hear amazing things you know about these cars, so I’m familiar with yourself. I think the previous owner is planning a trip to yourself at some point with his vehicle.

I could probably manage until Wednesday. I’m going to sort my other vehicle out to get me to work tomorrow, today, so if you are willing to do that for me, that would be fantastic!! I’d seriously appreciate it. I just need it to work temporarily till I can get the motor replaced. I have one, but it’s something I can afford to do until I get paid. I can supply the tea and some basic tooling! 😅

Please let me know and I’m happy to pass my contact details to you privately to arrange.

Many thanks

Darren

hi,
Yes it is, braided is grand.
Question, what is the length of the cable?
Another question, at each end of the cable does it look like this?

UPDATE

having put the earth cable on the motor and attached it to a bolt on the body, the wiper is still doing the same thing. Therefore, it’s safe to conclude that the motor is indeed b****red.

Hi,
Glad you have made good progress and sorry to hear it did not fix the wiper motor.
It's not 100% broken until some electical and mechanical investigation is carried out.
The wiper spindles could be bound up with corrosion or you may have a blown fuse.
The new ground cable may not have continuity.

Timmus will fix it.

:)👍

It was something that was suggested and investigated. I like to rule out as much possibilities as I can before going for the nuclear option.

I think it just requires a new motor. Luckily, I have one. It just sweeps to the edge of the windscreen and on its return, stops halfway and only wipes from there back to the edge. There’s a lot of grease on the wiper mechanism, so I don’t think it’s rusty. Not sure how a fuse could cause it, but anything’s possible! 😂

I hope he can. 🙂

Hi,
Thinking ahead in preparation for Wednesday if you remove one of the plastic caps from the wiper arm that you have access to. Spray penatrating oil in around the nut until it fills up the depression with oil then pop the cap back on. (Don't get sprayed with oil when you do this part)
It may help move the job along if the wiper arm needs to be removed on Wednesday.
:) 👍

If you're going to put penetrating oil on, you can access the caps on both the spindles if you turn off the ignition with the wiper at the top of its stroke.

Can you take a pic of the earth point you chose on the body? I normally use.on eon the engine. As there are lots around and they keep nice and dry generally.
Sure……I will try to do that tomorrow. It’s very dark now.

From memory only one of the two wiper mounts/spindles are driven and the passive/slave can seize up which could potentially be the cause of your issue 👍
That is correct only the large spindle is driven , small spindles are prone to seize.
