VAG-COM or code reader?

Hi,

I'm looking for advice on whether a VW-specific fault code reader or VAG-COM software is best for reading/resetting fault codes and service messages on an A2.

Is buying a cable and using the shareware version of VAG-COM sufficient?

Thanks

GA

VAG COM (full version) is a very complex and involved piece of kit.

It can do everything that your dealer can (and more), but can be tricky to use for a beginner.

A simple reader can clear many things, dependant on model, but not as much as the full VAG interface.

A shareware version and cheap lead can read a few modules, but cannot recode or reset anything.
Cheers,

Mike

I would say the VAG com is complex as Skipton says, i personally went for the code reader as it will do as much and more then my technical knowledge will allow anyway. Hopefully you will never have much more than a need for diagnostic, fault code clearing and service light including longlife. All these can be done with a code diagnostic tool , even I can use one, thats how simple they are!

I too went for the cheap lead and shareware. I've been able to lookup all the modules I've ever needed and clear fault codes. Might be worth spending £20 and then upgrading to a full VAG-COM once you "out grow" it

Cheers

more specific Q:

What reader or software version will let me switch back on the passenger airbag that VW disabled at my request?

Thanks
