Your right about the Vagcom look alike stuff on Ebay, dont buy it, instead try a company called Gendan Automotive products - http://www.gendan.co.uk/, they sell the authorsed Ross Tech interface hardware and they provide a good level of after sales support.
A little advice, I bought 2 cables (Vag Com 409.1) one, from a seller from another uk forum, who was adamant that it will work, yet it didn't!
I spent months with Shoby Car on driveway with the seller insisting it was a fault in the wiring work that I had done, which was why the 'Engine' option would come back with a communication error (Can't Sync Baud Rate - as far as I can remember it).
Having no experience of this, & dispite me being 100% sure in my work, eventually I began to doubt myself and my work. BUT, it was the ruddy cable all the time!
SO, either buy a original and spend hundreds of pounds or TEST one BEFORE you buy it if its one of those... shall we say ..non original cables. Also the cheaper ones that run on shareware versions of the software are usually pretty useless cos when you actually need to fix something of any importance, you can't, that's why it's shareware.
I bought the Vag Com Hex USB 704.1 (selling on Gendan site for £260) from someone for a lot cheaper. Works brilliantly, with having just scanned Humps' car just yesterday!
