Various Fault Codes

I got time today after a busy few months to re-scan my TDI 75 SE, I found the following codes but have a few general questions:

17964 - Charge Pressure Control: Negative Deviation
P1556 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

I think this code is to do with my air-leak sending me into limp mode - i'm currently looking into this but could someone confirm this code.

---------------

01317 - Control Module in Instrument Cluster (J285)
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent
00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G85)
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent

I have noticed that if I re-start the car whist rolling after limp mode then 9 times out of 10 I get a powersteering amber light come up and at slow speeds the steering becomes heavy. If I pull over and restart then engine then it is all ok again.
----------------

01463 - Alarm triggered by Sensor for anti-theft alarm System
81-00 - Open
--

01370 - Alarm triggered by Interior Monitoring
35-00 - -
01368 - Alarm triggered by Luggage Compartment Switch
35-00 - -
01369 - Alarm triggered by Hood Switch
35-00 - -

Is the above faults just telling me the alarm was triggered?

I have noticed that when the alarm is triggered all that happens is a continuous pathetic beeping sound and flashing indicators. Is this normal?

The codes for the alarm are just indicating that it has been triggered and by what, comes in handy for diagnosing faulty switches when you have random alarm triggering!.

Ive had one set off by the interior monitor when i locked someone in! You just need to determine if these are triggers which you know have happened or whether they are symptoms of switches failing etc. not sure how you would you trigger some of those ones accidentally.

And yes the pathetic beeping is all you get im afraid.

hope someone can help with your other questions.

All the best.

Thanks for the replys guys

I checked the codes and I think it is probably my cheap cable not talking properly with those modules, I do plan to invest in the full VAG-COM.

However can anyone help with this point -

I have noticed that if I re-start the engine whist rolling (after limp mode) then I get a powersteering amber light come up and at slow speeds the steering becomes heavy. If I pull over and restart then engine then it is all ok again.

I don't know if this is to be expected by turning the engine off at 60mph or if i have uncovered some other problem

Cheers - Scott

Hi Scott
I occasionally freewheel part way down my sloping drive with the ignition on to free the steering lock but without starting the engine. The power steering does not work unless the engine is running

Cheers Spike

Thanks Spike

It was more the Amber warning light that flashes up as I re-start the engine that concerns me. It only happens if i restart the engine whilst driving over 10mph. I assume that a warning is to be expected as re-starting the engine whist moving is not normal behavior.

Any thoughts?

Hi Scott, last time I had power steering cutting out with amber warning was at low speed, it was a dying battery. But yours sound like related to limp mode, but hey, it is free to check battery with with a voltmeter.

I wouldn't worry about the alarms unless they randomly trigger the siren and are persistence even after you've cleared them.

Why would you restart the engine while moving? As a matter a fact, why stop it in the first time? With all the servo steering and servo braking, you're only a push away from no brakes!!! It's no joking matter, and in all the years since i've driven servo assisted cars, i was never curious to see what would happen if i restart the engine...
It's good that only the amber sign flashes, it should have a horn yelling at you not to do it!

Hi Trex

As mentioned in a previous thread, the engine re-start is to overcome a short term problem I have been having with the car going into limp mode due to an air leak. I have only had to do this a few times, but most times have been accompanied by the amber power steering warning just after the cars OK screen.

Cheers - Scott

Trex is right. It is very dangerous to switch off ignition travelling at 60mph or any speed. Many many years ago, as a young and very silly person I did just that. Thinking I could save fuel on a long downhill!! Do NOT try this anywhere!

When I needed the brake, it wasn't there because the servo wasn't on without the engine running! Without powersteering wasn't so bad, but brakes! Never again.

I appreciate that it is very naughty but I still don't understand why I get the beep. Spike mentioned he freewheels occasionally before starting the engine, under the same circumstances I get a power steering warning. The fact is I can repeatedly get this warning if the car is moving before the engine is on and I don't know if this is to be expected?

Can anyone advise?

Cheers

I suspect its speed related. I think the ESP activates above 10 -15mph and triggers the warning because the power steering is not working.
Safety - In addition to the warnings highlighted by other members there is also the risk of the steering lock activating if the key is turned a fraction too far

Cheers Spike

Thanks Spike

I will take heed of the warnings, but will be much happier on Saturday after I fix this last leaky hose and hopefully prevent further Limping. I think your comment on the ESP is bang on that seems to fit the conditions of the error and hence is not a problem per se.
