VCDS FSI ECU Measuring Block Label File

Good Evening,

The other day I noticed in posts by our Italian FSI owning member Gorevolution that his VCDS has a Label file (in Italian) for the FSI ECU. As far as I am aware no such file exists in English so......

Is anybody aware of such a Label file in English or indeed any other language?

Thanks.

Andy

Edit. I have since this post in post#9 elaborated a little on label files and why this would be beneficial.

Andy that does not make sense. VCDS does not produce different version for different languages all the LBL files are the same. All the different languages do is chance the titles on the various screens but everything is in the same place for each language version.

All I can think is that he has a custom file that may not have been made by Ross Tech that has been added into his VCDS.

Have a read of this web page about custom LBL files....

It makes sense to me!

I am led to assume that some enthusiastic Italian FSI owner has previously built a label file, submitted to Ross-Tech as per the last paragraph of

I had a look in the VCDS label folders, I will look again, but maybe I should download the latest VCDS version that may contain this Italian label file that Ross-Tech have since distributed, and in the absence of an English version I will get the Italian version!???!!!! Do Label files have to be in English??? I vaguely assumed that Ross-Tech would add a language tag and only download your language.

It is too late tonight, must think about this tomorrow. I have just noticed the Italian Label file name...

Good Afternoon,

My head is a little clearer so onward, a few things are firming up.

1. Thanks to the RT forum linked above by @audifan label files do exist in other languages (as evidenced by the Italian example linked above) and some are held by RT, unseen by us.
2. Thanks to the recent link by @A2Steve to Wiki pages built by the German A2 club I now have in German partial content for a FSI ECU label file. With current browsers now having language translation built-in foreign sites are fairly simple to read and having previously ticked the 'automatically translate from German' this appears in English for me, but you have to put up the nuances of 'lost in translation' - FSI owners have a BATH under the bonnet (I prefer showers), 'DESIRED VALUE (I do not want to marry it and have babies)......

3. I noticed Gorevolution's label file name has a suffix .CL, which I am guessing is .CLB and the B gets lost as the display field is too short. The VCDS label file has dozens of these .CLB files and I am struggling to find any information on them. Anybody?
4. I am in PM conversation with Gorevolution about sharing a copy of his label file but I noticed this afternoon label files are copyrighted and maybe this is not the correct way to go.
5. I suppose the correct way to go is ask RT but I foresee I will have a problem with this.

RT's tech support are helpful, and respond quickly and positively. Just explain our problem and what you know so far. They've helped me several times.
Often the reply will come from Mr Rosstech, Uwe Rossler, I think, himself!

Some details here on the .CLB files from various threads on Ross-Tech forum, the last one might be the way to go:

Good Evening,

Pm sent.

On another point I did notice from your contribution to the linked thread 'None' appears as your FSI ECU .LBL file name, which kind of suggests no such file is available in English as I get the impression from the RT website registered Lite users have access to label files. Curiously mine comes up with 'Redirection Fail', must be difference but what that is I am struggling to find on the RT website.

Thanks for taking the time to find and post these links.

Looks like CBL files turn out to be encrypted files which will kill any attempt of me translating Gorevolution's label file. The man himself.

However they do seem something (I have yet to understand) to do with language translation of label files but provided by RT on request.

I thought I would briefly elaborate on label files, what and I am trying to achieve and why, perhaps I should have done this earlier.

A label file is a simple text file that holds short text phrases that describe the contents of measuring block field values applicable to a controller and appear below the value of a block field value when displayed on-screen.

If no label field exists for a controller VCDS uses 'best guess' text instead. To be fair they are not bad and better than nothing but the text is a little obvious and generalised.

An example by @PlasticMac, no label file is available (red box) and 'best guess' text (green box).

Notice no distinction between the two pressure values in block 140 and the rather bland 'Load' under the first field value and absent text under the last.

Now compare with the same from our Italian member @Gorevolution. A label file is available (Red box) and descriptive Italian text from the label file (green box).

Image - 2.jpg

There is now an informative distinction between the two pressure fields, 'Valore desiderato' = 'Desired(!) value', usually seen in English as 'Setpoint/Target value'. In English the other pressure field is 'Valore attuale' = 'Actual value'. The first field text is not bland and text under the last field.

I hope this explains why it would be better to have a label file in English for the FSI ECU, but not a big deal, just better.

Good Evening,

Progress has been made.

Many thanks to @PlasticMac who approached Ross-Tech and obtained a label file in German for the FSI ECU, no English file being available.

The German file was translated (machine) to make an English version but still needs to be corrected for nuances of 'lost in translation', inconsistent capitalization and text content. This will take some time as there are 900 lines to inspect but when finished the label file will be available to all members.

Nice. Did not think it was a Ross Tech file as it would have been bundled within the program. I appreciate the work of the originator and the subsequent work to translate and improve the file.

Well done all concerned.

The German language label file, for the FSI Engine, was created by Ross-Tech. They didn't create an English language version.
I believe there are no English language label files for other A2 controllers, but VCDS will use a "best guess" and this works OK for most controllers.
But, many of the FSI engine's parameters have no equivalent, so best guess is not much help. Indeed quite a few are left blank for this reason.
Getting the file from Ross-Tech was the easy bit. @Andrew has the hard bit.
@Seb_Gurkyh , of this parish, also helped, when I posted a request for help on A2freun.de.
Mac.
