Hi all I was thinking of getting VCDS but then I thought I can’t be bothered getting the computer out making sure it’s charged etc

sooooo I decided to buy this !!!!

it’s called Carly connected car and it’s absolutely amazing

It’s basically full VCDS but in a small Box

You can do full scans on every module of the car and even check live data

Also you can code your car for example if you want your side lights to come on when you unlock your car you can do that :)

I paid £85 posted for the unit and then £25 for the year subscription

It’s well worth it and cheaper than VCDS:)

It connects to your phone too so you don’t have to carry a laptop around everywhere :)

If you can’t tell I’m super happy with my purchase

By the way I’m not associated with the company in anyway I’m just saying how good it is :)

I very much doubt that even approaches the full capability of VCDS, although as you say it's cheaper. It'll take a while before you can assess its capability with any degree of objectivity.

Interested to hear if this is any good. I use Carly for my BMW cars. I can recode/Program ECU's it's a really indepth bit of kit.

Only VCDS supports all the VAG codes. Other code readers convert the car's OBD port outout to a set of generic codes and associated descriptive text.
This is a big problem for older cars, like ours, where the VCDS codes are 20 years old. These generic devices are designed for modern versions of the generic OBD code. VCDS Lite, for free, and a KKL lead for under a fiver? Sounds good to me. Spend around £75 to register it, and for pre 2005 /06 cars, you have the best tool available, along with the Rosstech Wiki. Cheapest is not always the best, but here, it (VCDS) just might be!

Looking at the Carly website, and links to supported models >Audi >A2, the functionality looks a bit limited. (my Mk1 TT seems to be much the same).
Make sure it'll do what you need, or consider returning it.
I had a similar experience with OBD Eleven. On older cars, many functions, (I particularly needed Controller Output Testing and Basic Settings) simply aren't supported on these new devices. I used a registered copy VCDS Lite, and that did everything I needed, and more.

You can't even use this to reset the service / oil indicator for the A2 (according to their website). So basically it's just an OBD code reader in a fancy and somewhat pricey package. No thanks.

Second recent post about diagnostics and alternatives to VCDS......…...for what its worth, is it worth trying find faults with unknown/unproven kit......…..I for one as a techie would not waste my time or money buying cheaper kit. Trying to save money and in some ways cutting corners when it comes to diagnosing faults is foolish ………......false positive results cost both time and money and in many cases this far outways the original cost of the equipment people swear by that has been used for years with both proven results and investment by the developers. VCDS/Ross Tech is the proven diagnostic gear most if not all good VAG/AUDI workshops use......…(outside the dealer network of course) and the equipment I rely on.

Well I have been chasing a number of faults from VCDS which came up as running rich, a simple odb2 scanner showed them as heater circuit failure now it’s fixed, VCDS did not report it correctly and this is version 14 surprised. However it is a good tool, and for reprogramming etc couldn’t do without it.

Full VCDS has the option to use basic OBD scanning so ideal for most if not all fault finding...…….surprised it didn't pull a code for heater fault mine did the other day on Project Poppy 1.4.

I wonder if the earlier version of VCDS (the 2005/06 VCDS Lite 1.2) would give the same incorrect fault description? Maybe later versions of VCDS support codes which didn't exist back in the day?

i remember checking when i bought obdeleven which did most bits i needed at the time plus works with newer cars for unlocking features etc. im sure vcds could do it but it is simple and easy, was able to reset service period and do some other bits (it had option to lock doors over 10mph etc. and some other features - seem to be user submitted rather than built in though for the codes/adaptations.

It did die and i need to return it for warranty though.

I looked at this adapter as well but it showed as unsupported on their website when i bought obdeleven so it was a no straight away.

ive got that - its rubbish - doesn't do a quarter of the stuff that vcds does - it might be better for newer cars but for the a2, vcds is best!
