Hi Mac,

I have no idea if forum software can be configured to make the register only visible to logged in members, I expect so but that would not be up to me. As it stands it will be public but it will not contain confidential information beyond the general location of a member.

You do raise a good point though.

Andy
If the request for help could only be made via Club PM, that would effectively make it members only.
Mac.

Great idea, I will have a a full fat version of VCDS sat waiting for me when I’m back in the country - once I’ve learnt how to use it I will gladly offer the scan service to those in need as a way of giving back to this fine community.

I wouldn’t want to start playing around with codes until I’d properly learnt the ropes on my own car though!!!
Good Afternoon,

Glorious day here in the UK.

I have little expertise with VCDS, you don't need it at the simple scan for faults level. When you get your copy of VCDS you will see at the top level menu there is an AutoScan button, turn ignition on click the button and VCDS scans and reports on all sub systems, it takes about three minutes, that is all that is needed here.

Sign up now, you can add a comment .'Available from Autmn 2020'.

Hi Mac,

Yes, that how it will work, I did explain this in an earlier draft of the invitation but took it out thinking I would be adding too much detail in the initial post. To be clear any member wanting to take advantage of a free scan sends a PM to the selected member offering a free scan, and takes it from there, no 'central' involvement.

Members only then, hope you sign up.

Andy

I would be happy to help with this, but I’d need to get my counterfeit cable working again as my Hexnet is limited to 10 vehicles

Thank you to all who have volunteered so far, not a bad start for the initial weekend of recruitment to the register.

Obviously the more volunteers the better, a great way to help out members, think about offering, give something back, meet members and chat about our cars.

I stress no expertise is expected beyond offering a free scan at your convenience.

Andy

Edit. Reminder, to sign up for the register reply to the RSVP above post 1 on page 1.

Just wondering if I should change the title 'VCDS (Or Other) Free Scan Register' to simply 'Free Scan Register' to take the emphasis off VCDS. While many members have VCDS many members will have some other scanning kit they use and as long as it is reliable anything will qualify, sign up don't hold back.

Any comments.

Andy

@Andrew
I must say, I expected more members to sign up.
I guess the question is why have many members who have scanning facilities decided not to offer them formally, to other members.
Maybe it's a privacy/security concern. Anyone like to clarify please?
Mac.

I would but I'm not up to speed as yet and would be terrified of bricking someone's car.
Thanks for your comment.

Assuming you have VCDS then running AutoScan is all that is required and I am confident that will not brick anyone's car.
No fancy coding expected.

You raise a good point maybe some kind of disclaimer but that is getting a bit legal. Comments?

Andy

Evening all,

I’m happy to be added to the list (fully registered Hex Net Unlimited VIN).

Free scans in Coalville (5 mins off J22/M1) available and have ability to do SKC retrieval.

Could also meet up along the A46 between Leicester and Lincoln as I commute daily, drop me a PM.

Can also add PCBBC Firmware to your RNS-E. Also assist in soft coding as have intimate knowledge of this head unit and it’s factory peripherals.

I’m gaining experience with VCDS on the automotive side but probably only just scratched the surface to be honest.

Let me know what you need doing and I’ll let you know if it’s within my ability.

Anything I am able to do for you will all be FOC. It’s my way of giving back after absorbing so much information from this great Forum.

Kind regards,

Tom

Apologies for the slow response I have been busy on other thing the last few days and thanks for you comment.

I am not surprised but numbers have crept up a little since you posted, I am happy enough at this stage.

Yes lots of members with some form of scanning kit have not come forward. I am getting a few indications why not, lack of expertise is one repeated, but I do stress nothing more than a free scan is expected, if a member is confident on offering more it is up to them.

As I have mentioned I think VCDS in the title is putting off members with other kit, I think I will change it but I have had no comment on this, any reliable scanning kit will suffice.

One helpful PM contained the phrase 'all and sundry arriving on my doorstep'. In response, all; I would be surprised if anyone receives more than one request a year, if that, while they must be members to PM, a suggestion of 'hiding' the register in the Marketplace so it is not visible to the world at large has merit, comments anyone?

More importantly I do stress there is no obligation to accept a request for a scan, it may not be immediately convenient e.g. new baby, but I will add anyone offering can always vet a request, click their avatar for background and refuse iif not happy, Indeed if I have a request from a new member, joined today, zero posts I will not be available, the hard disc on my laptop will mysteriously crash and leave me with no scanning facility! Waiting for my son to donate an old laptop but he will not be visiting for several months! However any new member who has posted an intro thread which seeks advice on faults they have come across will be welcome, fact it is probably such new members to which the register will be most useful but not always.

I can think of several other misgivings, e.g. Irregularly working away from home to not be feasible. Any comments here or by PM welcome.

Thanks to members who have recently added theirs name.

I intend to publish the register later next week, still undecided how to chop up the UK geographically, it's not easy here in Oxford we are nowhere! varies, sometimes Central, sometimes Thames Valley, South, South West.??? Europe is easy, Luzt is covering that by himself!

I think the registration went off for a little while. I tried to to start with and it wasn't letting me. Tried it again a couple of days later and it was fine. May be a bit of a reason

I was wary of this to start with, but as long as you only do a scan and don't start changing the car's settings, you can't damage the car

@Teresa is spot on. You must deliberately change from the diagnostics to start even reading codes, let alone changing them. If and when you go for that, make a note of the original setting (a few digits, nothing complicated), so you can always get back to where you started.
I can't imagine how anyone could drive a car, with an EML warning on the dash, for months (even years) without knowing what is wrong. Would you ignore a low oil warning? Think of it as looking in the troubleshooting table at the back of a manual.
To quote Aleksandr Orlov, "simples"
Mac.

For those who have signed up just a chance to comment on where I have put you on a UK map that will be part of the Free Scan Register. This was not a precision process!, all done by eye. Hopefully you can work out who you are!!!

New additional members welcome, reply to the RSVP at the top of the thread.
