Very early Service required indicator after just 2k miles

Hi. The Service required indicator is being displayed just 2k miles after the last service 15 months ago. The A2 should be on Long Life Service. I started getting 800 miles to service warning a few weeks ago but have only done about 200 miles over 2 longer journeys and say 100 miles in shorter journeys in that time.

Do you think the garage didn't reset the service indicator or reset to normal or is this genuine on account of short journeys?

Your garage did indeed reset the service required, and you need to get it serviced asap.

Long life service is intended to benefit cars that do high mileages rather than any 'normal' usage.

Just checked my records and prior to the 2021 service the previous LL service was in 2018, so on that occasion I got 3 years and 6,000 miles. Swings and roundabouts ;) I will get it done.

To me LLS was about using better oils and intelligent servicing based on usage like short/long journeys, no. cold starts, average speed, etc.

Either way I think you are pushing the car beyond the point that other items are due for service. The brake fluid should be changed every two years so really if you have reached 2 years and the service indicator has not come on do the service in accordance with Audi requirements. The air filter and fuel filters are probably been over due replacement also. Remember the indicator is only for the engine and does not consider all the other service items.

LL service also states 20 000 miles or 2 years.
Precisely. Not 2,000 miles and 1.25 years.

I've just spent an hour+ going back through all my receipts and produced this table:

A2 Service Summary 2005-2022.jpg

I think the pandemic upset the routine with my local independent garages closed for many months. I shall be booking an oil+filter + air filter+ fuel filter + gearbox oil change.

The long life servicing figures quoted are theoretical maximums rather than a guaranteed minimum. Unless you are regularly making long journeys at pace, you should not expect to get 2 years out of a long life service.

Your engine has detected a deterioration in the performance of the oil that was put in last year, and is telling you that you need to change it. That is how long life servicing works.

It sounds like you'd be better off switching to the standard servicing schedule, which doesn't preclude you using long life specified oil. Your engine would certainly appreciate it.

The clue is in the elapsed months. Not being a fan of LL servicing, and having been in the trade for " a minute or two " I have heard too many times those words " well, I didn't do many miles, so it didn't need any servicing " Then a mass of horrors often follows.

The 'service due' indicator built into the A2 doesn't permit LL servicing intervals to exceed 2 years. So it looks like someone reset your service interval when no oil change was done,, I'd guess when your brake fluid was changed in 2020. And if that has happened once, there's a fair chance it's happened before.

As I've already suggested, everything is a lot more straightforward on the standard servicing schedule, which seems in any case far more suited to your usage.

Steve, are you suggesting that there are sensors inside the engine to test the quality of the oil? Sounds pretty advanced technology for the 1990's
