Anyone here know anything about VirginNets broadband service e.g. good/bad, customer service etc?.

Cheers

Strangely enough, I got it last Thursday.

Customer service seems pretty good. Had a little trouble on the first day, however they immediately took action and offered some compensation (only 84p/day of inconvience).

Speed and realibility seem good, however I've not nothing to compare it with

if u want good dsl get eclipse its relible and possibly the fastest 512k service on a 50:1 contention ratio u will find, cost £26 per month plus one off £30 for activation plus whatever u was gonna buy the dsl modem for, but u benifit from a very very nice service with no hastles

1.4TDiSE 2002, Biege interior, Brilliant Black, Concert II.

Just out of interest, to see how the various service providers match up, how about doing a speed test.

I've just used http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ and got a result of 530.1Kb/sec.

I'm on Telewest broadband - Blueyonder. £25 a month if you have other telewest services. £33 otherwise.

Thanks guys.

The thing that interested me in Virgin was their 30 day cancellation period. I'm moving house sometime this year and people like BT treat a house move as breaking your contract and require full payment for the remaining year.

What modems (ADSL) you go for-buy your own or supplied by the provider?.

Are you planning on using just the one computer on the connection or would you like the potential to add more?

I started out with a USB modem (Alcatel SpeedTouch Frog) which seems to be the "default" modem that the ISPs are pushing. After a year I'd outgrown the Frog and ended up parting with more cash to get a combined ADSL modem/router/wireless access point: http://www.netgear.co.uk/html/prod_routers_adsl.htm#dg824m. If there's any likelihood of needing an extra connection, it's better to go down the router route [:I]. You will need a network card for your PC, though. www.adslguide.org has a number of reviews of the various types of modem which is a good starting point for comparing them.

Hi Rob,

Your link advised my connection speed is currently 467Kb/sec!! As I said above, I am using VirginNet.

Do you still get the grin factor when downloading stuff tho'. I've just reinstalled Kazaa and have to chuckle at the speed - especially as it used to take about 2 hours to download one file on dial up, whereas now its a matter of minutes.

I think I'll give Virgin a try with their modem (or whatever it's called) pack.

What is the quality of voice calls when your on the net?.

Hi Steve,

There is no effect to the voice calls at all. The filters supplied seem pretty good.
