VSI reset

According to the manual, only the dealer can perform a VSI reset - you yourself can only perform a Fixed Service reset, ie. 15000 km / 9000 mi (or is it 10000 mi?)
My question is: what exactly is it that the dealer does? Does he have to 'set' the 50000 km limit (30000 mi) 'by hand'? Can he accidentally (or on purpose) put in 30000 km (20000 mi), the limit for petrol cars?
The reason I'm asking is that my 'mileage to go to next service' is now at 21300km (first recalculation after VSI maintenance), while the three times before, it was at 32300km.
I haven't changed my driving style at all..
Also, I notice that new Audis no longer have the 50000km/30000mi VSI for diesel engines, but only 30000km/20000 mi, like their petrol siblings.
I guess that, with profits on new cars diminishing, the friendly dealer is very happy to see you more often for maintenance..

The way a dealer rests the service indicator is via the diagnostic port.

It can be done with the right equipment (a full version of VAG-COM and a registered interface), but isn't particularly intuitive.

Cheers,

Mike

Yes, but can they enter (accidentally or on purpose) a different VSI limit? eg not the diesel's 50000km one, but the petrol's (or any recent Audi on VSI) 30000km?

I would have thought not - normally, the dealer's VAS 1551/52 machine (the 'official' version of VAG-COM) only allows the operator a very limited set of parameters and is vehicle dependant.

It probably is possible, but I would have thought it unlikely.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Werner
I had not heard that Audi had reduced the max oil change mileage but if they have then it is more likely to be related to engine durability than dealer profits.
As Skipton indicated, when the dealer hooks up the VAS they enter specific car model/ vin number details which makes the chance of loading incorrect data very unlikely (Has anyone else watched them do a service on the Audi chanel)
Having said all that, the latest version of VagCom (which normally mirrors VAS) shows it may be possible to change service parameters on some cars - see link

Cheers Spike
