Water pump failure.

The Colonel

Just sat at the roadside awaiting the RAC. Looks like the water pump has failed. Coolant everywhere. The needle on the temp gauge didn’t rise above 90, but the engine stopped and now just makes a whirring sound when turned. Have I fried the engine.

Oh dear, you really don't have any luck with this car. I'd suggest you get yourself a TDI 75 and just start enjoying A2 ownership again.

So, seems the waterpump has collapsed, loosening the belts, knocking the timing out and blown the engine. Sigh.

£1200 at least for top end rebuild and then there’s the original starting issue to be sorted.

I guess it’s time for the colonel so stand down and stand easy.

Surely an engine swap would be worthwhile, I wouldnt think an FSI engine has much value?
Replace water pump, pipe and thermostat n housing and clean intake before installation. Much easier with a loose engine?

If I was mechanically minded enough I’d think about that. But I’ve had that much bad luck with this car that i think I’m just going to sell it off for spares/repairs.

From your profile picture the car looks in really good condition :) If I was you get a second hand FSI engine and get your mechanic to plonk it in for you :);) it’s a A2 we are talking about. Of course it’s worth getting a new engine ?

Colonel. Appreciate your reluctance. Have read your previous posts and you have spent a lot trying to resolve the original issue. When do you just decide to stop thowing good money after bad? Whatever you decide - good luck.

The moment the engine died and didn’t start again. It’s been a good year, but also a very frustrating year.
