Webasto modification.

It does make you realise how main dealers get in a mess fixing cars these days. By modern standards these cars are simple, and with all the massive wealth of knowledge on here specialising in one car over a 25 year period it’s not surprising main dealers give up.

And one last thing to check in VCDS is the software version of the heater, it’s in the right window and it will be D49, D50, D51 or something. There is an extra setting you can adjust on later software

Ah ok, I may have a look on my other A2. On this one I didn’t put the diagnostic pin in for fear of it interfering with the working rover unit.😀

Yeah that was probably for the best :D

You can also measure the resistance of the glow plug, do it indoors because the range is specified at 24 celcius. And the glow plug is the flame sensor, so if it’s out of spec if won’t detect a flame

Not to sidetrack this, but to @2work you can also remove pin 3 from the ECU and connect it to a change over really. Normally closed to the ECU and normally open to ground. Then you just need a spare output from your CDIS to the relay.
Or have Paul adjust the cut-in temperature in your ECU to allow the Webasto to come on when it’s warmer outside :)

@datsundrew after some more reading, I an reasonably sure your glow plug resistance will be wrong. That doesn’t explain why they work then don’t, but it’s worth checking

Yes it’s very odd how’s there is no going back to them working after being fitted in the car.
