Weeked from hell, Powersteering

Well, my endless enjoyment of my A2 just came to an end, when i started my car yesterday the lights for the powersteering went nuts. I started the engine and tried to drive out of the garage, but no way, the steering was hard as a rock. Still i drove some meters but the powersteering just came - and went - came - and went, after a few meters i ended up calling Audi roadside assistance.

They took the car to my dealer and gave me a replacement for the time being (a 04 Polo, nice car by the way). Today i called them and they told me that there might be something wrong with the sensor that checks the position of the steeringwheel. Sounds very strange.

A month ago the car had its Powersteering-pump changed due to that the previous owner filled it up with regular oil instead of the Audi-steering-oil. But could that have effect on the current problem? Have some of you had the same problem?

Anyways i've come very close to hitting my head in the wall multiple times[2]. This problem came 1 day after some idiot scrached up my bumper[29], no i am without my dear A2...

Thought i'd share my thoughts and maybe get some comforting words from you guys + maybe some hints of what the problem could be

My A2 is also in the garage. One week so far, but I got another A2 to drive. My car needs new arm. I don`t know whether it`s left or right ha ha.
It`s not funny cos the factory in Germany hasnt got any arms so it looks like long time off the road. At least the repairs are done under warranty.

Our old 2000/X SE 1.4 petrol had the steering angle sensor fail when it was 2 years old.

Initially the warning symbolcame on and I couldn't see a problem. However, eventually it made the steering go slightly hard for a few seconds - and you could trigger it by large steering inputs.

Replaced under warranty, and it was fine after that.

The problem is that my A2 is out of its warrantyperiod, so i was wondering if you DaveS were given any numbers regarding the price of the cost? It seems as if my problem is very much like the one you had

I thought the power steering on A2's was electric? If it is there should be no need for power steering fluid reservoir or top ups.

Hi Bigshow,

No sorry I did't see how much it cost. I'd imagine the labour would have been the biggest element ?

You should be able to get an approx cost from you local dealer. My own service guy is very helpful in pricing up such jobs as each part has a standard labour time.

I know its 20/20 hindsight but I'd always consider the extended warranty from Audi. Note that as long as the car is serviced in the network you can add it back on again at any point.

Okay now I know its hydraulic - given the fact I have just driven three years without putting any oil (fluid) in the power steering can someone tell me where the reservoir is? Although as the car has just had a service I would presume that it has been topped up.

Mine locked up when i was trying to change the head lamp bulb. the steering was as stiff as the last time i had an encounter with a Halle Berry look-alike. So i called audi over to my yard to sort the problem out. it turned ou to be the flaming power steering fuse (blown fuse).

Just got my car back from the dealers, they changed the powersteering-pump and the A2 is now A-OK[23]

But there's a "BUT"...
Everything is working BUT one of the functions on the DIS. When i got the car back the tank was 3/4 full, but the DIS said that i could only drive another 200km before a refill. Well i filled it up with diesel, about 7litres, and the DIS now shows 300km remaining. It usually shows something like 700km after a refill.

Hmmm, any ideas? I called the dealer and they say that they only changed the pump and didnt't touch anything else, i find this a bit hard to belive, eventhough it's strange that every other function on the DIS works except the "km to go untill next refil-thingy".

The dealer asked me check the results after completely emptying the tank, untill then i thought i'd check with my "gang" and A2OC[21]

Help needed

I can only imagine that the battery was fully disconnected while replacing the powersteering pump. Hardly unusual, IMO.
The dealer should now about the ill effects that prolonged loss of power has on any of the onboard computer systems. But it could be that your 'miles to go' was the only thing to get confused.
A refill should however always trigger the 1st recalc/reset of the figure, so that is strange. Maybe going from 3/4 to full wasn't enough (I have no idea how this 'reset' trigger works)

Well, as long as you regular fuel gauge is still working, I'd give it some time to 're-adjust', just like the dealer said.

Now that was a big help, wasn't it? ... ermm..

Cheers,

Edo

You sure it has not reset itself to MILES from Kilometres?

Hmm, you've got some great ideas guys[24]

Well, the dealer did recommend me to wait untill the tank is totally empty and then get a refill to check if it resets. I agree with you swiv, it's sounds like something needs to reset since everything else works.

And maersk, not a bad idea either, i'm pretty sure now that the "km-2-go" shows about 50% of what's the real number. Today it showed 360km when i was doing 90km/h on the highway, usually it shows around 720km-2-go (a bit optimistic, but that's what it shows).

The thing is that it does still say "KM" on the display, but i will check if it's possible to change the language. I do remember reading something about changing from C to F on the climate-controll. Do you know how one changes from Miles to Km?
