Chat Weird problem with my FSI rear parking detectors & other concerns

Hi there, all, this is my first real post on here ; have had my 2005 FSI for several months now, but prefered to read as many threads as possible on here, rather than just firing off dumb questions at random to solve issues, but this one has really got me confused, so I'm searching advice from the many experts that there are on this forum.
Earlier this week, I loaded & securely fixed a trolleyjack into my luggage compartment & drove to a friends house & parked up ; the detector was working perfectly before I drove off.
Did some work, loaded the jack back into the boot, tried to start the car & it would rapidly turn over, but no sign of life from the engine until cranking for about 20 seconds or so then it fired up & ran smoothly. Selected reverse & the detector went crazy ...... beeping away all the time plus intermittent continuous beeps. Selected 1st gear, drove home as normal without further issues.

When home, switched of & restarted several times without issue, but selecting reverse still drove the system crazy !! For info, the reversing lights come on as normal & the system is not an after market fitment.

I do have other electrical related issues with the car, but am not in a position to work on the car at the moment, as I recently had a hand operation, which I should be recovered from in the next few weeks.

Many thanks for any opinions ? ideas about what has caused this issue.

Best thing to do is have a VCDS scan done on the car. You may have disturbed either sensor wiring or wiring to the controller. Was the jack to the left side of the boot as that is were the reverse unit is. Do you have a false floor as that raises the jack above the controller. Check to see if something has shorted out.

Hi there & thanks for the reply.
I can get a scan at my local Audi dealer.
The jack was on the lower floor level & well fixed down with a strap to the rhs of the boot.
Was just strange that at the same moment, the car became very difficult to fire up ; so far it had fired up immediately over the last 3 months.
Will get the scan & report any fault code findings.
Thanks again.

Could the errors have been caused by a severe voltage drop during the laboured start up? That can cause all manner of spurious fault codes to appear in various ECUs, which in turn could have given some legacy errors / warnings etc that need to be cleared once the voltage is back to normal.

I'm going to sound like a stuck record (based on several other recent threads), but I would have a look at cleaning the starter earth behind the passenger side headlight as this can cause difficult starting and a number of other issues if the earthing path (resulting from dirty earth here) sends current in unusual directions ; if the battery is old / of unknown provenance, VCDS looking at the voltage before / during / after starting and charging characteristics may also point at whether the battery is struggling and / or possibly needing replacement.

Edit - just read that it turned over without firing, so problem possibly not linked to that specific earth. Hope you have some luck and better advice soon :)

Robin, hi there & thanks for your comments.
The thing is that the turning over to try & start it was not laboured - in fact it was very eager, but just seemed like there was no spark to ignite the fuel (or no fuel being supplied to cylinders). prior to this incident, the car has always fired up after 1 second, max, hot or cold.

I will get a VCDS as soon as I can & I am finding out that the electronic systems of an A2 are way above my knowledge in that field !
It is just wierd how so many things seem to be interconnected, yet parking detector & ignition systems are so un-related !! (Well, should be).

I also have a 1974 Alfa 105 coupe, plus work on other Alfas & BMW's of that era - nice, simple things, but it is obvious that the A2 is in another era as far as electrics go.

Thank heavens for this fantastic site & it's very friendly, knowledgeable contributors !! I can see a trip to see @timmus coming up sometime when I and the car can get back to the UK !!
