Wet door cards

Hi,

On three of the four doors on my A2, after a prolonged spell of rain, the door cards are damp at the very bottom only. Does anyone have any idea as to why this might be? There is no obvious damage to any seals etc. I am not that knowledgeable about the A2 as yet so if you have any ideas I would be grateful if you could assume limited knowledge on my part when describing them!

Many thanks for any help you can offer.

Thanks Spike.

I took the car down to an independent Audi specialist yesterday and he's telling me that there is a membrane on the back on the door card which can perish and then let water in (I think it's this membrane that seals the alloy panel that is mentioned in the thread you directed me to). His solution - and I am paraphrasing - is to place a layer of a plasticine like substance on top of the membrane to seal it up......to do this for three doors is going to cost me c. £160. Does this sound like the right solution? Is there another way that I could fix this myself without going to the expense of paying a garage? Is there a workshop manual for the A2 that would show how to get the door cards off etc?

Appreciate your help.

he's talking bollocks. I've had all of the doors out and there is no such thing. There's only the seal from the inside of the aluminium on the door to the outside and I don't see how that would perish; that's also not really on the water side.

Your problem is probably badly-adjusted frames and you won't even need to take the cards off (which is easy - three tx20s). Start with trying to pull the top side of the doorframe in when the door is shut. If the seal isn't correct at the top, then you'll get water flowing in. Test with a watering can... I'm sure I've read about this before, will go looking for a solution shortly.

right, I'll take my words back slightly. It has been seen that the seal between the "aggregatenträger" and the door perishes, but it rarely happens. Very rarely. It's also possible that if it's not returned to its original position after removal that that causes issues.
It's also possible that the door is in the wrong place / loose. See http://www.a2-freun.de/forum/showthread.php?t=18743&highlight=nass+t%FCrverkleidung for some pics.

There is no foil, just this seal, and it's pretty flexible, so I don't really see how it's a problem.

I agree with bret, it sounds as though the garage is trying to bodge this repair.

As suggested, check the door alignment and seal, if this looks correct then the next step is to check the internal door seal behind the trim.
Attached below are two documents that detail how to remove the inside door trims, once you do this it should be easy to see if the water has entered this way. The most likely area is around the bottom edge of the cover plate onto which the window mechanism is mounted. Once you find the spot where the leak has occurred, slacken off the mounting bolts at this point to allow the cover to be released a small amount, clean the area and apply some silicon sealer to repair. Tighten in back up, replace the door trim and you're finished!

Easier said than done, but I hope it gives you enough confidence to have a go.

Thanks very much Bret and Steve and my apologies for the delay in replying.

I am going to look into this over the weekend and see if I can fix the problem using your advice.

Cheers

Ben
