What constitutes a GENUINE Colour Storm?

Ha ha. That's the storm I wanted to buy. It was located in central Scotland and was a one owner car before the current owner. To say I was gutted was an understatement. I would have happily handed over 5 figures but the owner was not for selling. To think I've searched the UK for one and it was on my doorstep!! There are my little collection of CS. My Papaya had the slatted grille being a 54 plate.

Out of interest I thought I would do a quick survey of the usual selling sites (ebay, Gumtree and Autotrader) for Colour Storms...

Findings
Autotrader - 6 advertised as CS - Only 1 genuine one
Gumtree - 2 advertised, both genuine
eBay - Only 1 advertised as CS - not genuine

So, out of a test 9 adverts, 3 genuine - not a good start :(

Just reviving an old thread since I found something that might be of interest about colour storms - don’t think this has been posted before? My dad has the original brochure from when he bought the car I have now, that includes a couple of pages at the back about the colour storm. Also the price list. See photos. These indicate that silver was never one of the “standard” colour storm colours, however it would have been possible to get a colour storm in any Audi colour through the “Audi exclusive programme” if you were prepared to pay enough. Somehow he managed to get his in silver without paying the surcharge - incidentally he’s got the original bill of sale that shows it really was a genuine silver colour storm ?

IIRC the silver colour storm was introduced much later than the standard 4 colour storm variants. Think orange also was not in the initial offering.

that would explain it, the brochure evidently was out of date. Still, somebody should make it their mission to find an A2 in an original non-A2 colour specified through the Audi Exclusive Programme… or has that happened already!?

(edit… of course it’s been done ? https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/project-exclusive.44333/)

Hi,
I wonder if any of you can put some confusion to rest for me? Gracie suffered a minor scrape on one of her wheel arches the other day. The damage isn’t serious, there’s no gouges in the plastic, however the paint has come off revealing the plastic underneath. Fortunately the guy who hit us has been very cooperative and agreed to fund the repair without any quibbling. I think it’s something that a smart repair outfit ought to be able to deal with. However I’m confused about paint codes. As this thread says, the code for the colour storm black is L1P9. However a forum search also revealed that some members were suggesting the code for the paint on the wheel arches is 3FZ. Is the latter correct, if so what’s the L1P9 for, is that just the roof?
Thanks

Given the date range on the product code, 3FZ must be the colour of the plastic itself - like when you sometimes see e.g. 6PS for Soul on a little sticker on the underside of unpainted interior plastics. The arches are all black underneath whatever colour paint - as per the lower unpainted section. Anything lighter that you can see will be the primer underneath the colour-coat. Malcolm, you will want paint in L1P9. Hope the job goes well ?

Ah thanks that makes sense, and yes in that case it’s evidently primer I can see underneath. Bad start so far getting quotes - first response was from someone who said they don’t do satin finishes, being a mobile outfit, as they pick up dust outside which on any other finish would polish out ?

If it comes to it, you can remove the rear arch and take it to someone to paint ....

hmm maybe… just found a thread about removing it, sounded a bit tricky to me! Failing all else I hope I can find a smart repairer with their own premises nearby.

I personally wouldn't go down the 'smart repair' route as it is never as good (especially long term) as it being done in a proper body shop with oven.

They are really just quick tidy up solutions used in the trade to sell a car, much like mobile wheel refinished who fill and blow over the faces. It just don't last long term and isn't really a 'proper' job.

Your best result will be the removal route as suggested above (which you are lucky in a way is the rear arch and not the front so it can be removed) but the issue you may have is it will probably look new and better than the rest of the trim as it's 20 odd years old but unfortunately that's unavoidable ?

I hear what you’re saying, given all the wheel arches have faded with age a freshly painted one is going to look a bit odd. I can’t really justify a proper body shop job as the cost will be excessive which is (IMHO) a bit unfair on the guy that’s stumping up for it, so even though I know it’ll be imperfect I’m going to stick with a smart repair. I’ve used these twice before (on other vehicles) and been pleased with the results.

If you have used them before and been happy that's really good but if it isn't removed and painted you will inevitably see the evidence of that.

It is fairly easy to remove the arch yourself and a reasonable body shop should then paint just the arch to a new standard for between £50-100 ?

Has anyone ever owned or seen a storm on a 05 plate. Makes me wonder if sales declined towards the end of 2004 and they were discontinued or we just stopped buying them. ?

Quick conclusion to this one. In the end I could only get one quote, from our nearest workshop-based chipsaway franchise, for a wince-inducing £270. To our relief the 3rd party agreed to pay without any quibble, if only everyone were so honest. The car’s just come back, the wheel arch looks like new, puts the other 3 to shame, however there was no way I could justify the kings ransom of having them done too, and if I use my trick of wiping them with danish oil they’ll be a good match. Anyway, let this be a warning to unsuspecting CS owners. Here’s the before and after…. (Oh and the young lad who returned Gracie thought it was a “really cool car” ?)
