Can any one tell me the difference between
1.4 tdi 75 bhp (silver T, silver D and silver I)
and
1.4 tdi 90 bhp (silver T, silver D and red I)
I am thinking about the parts and maitenance cost.

all the brake parts seems to be the exact same.
but what about:
- Exhaust system
- is the engine block the same
if i get a engine disaster and have to replace
- is the engine cylinder heads the same
if i get a engine disaster and have to replace
- is the engine control unit thee same
- is it only settings in the engine control unit which is different
- is the engine 1.4 TDI 90 bhp used in other vehicles (ex. Polo)

Just to correct one of your earlier statements: The 75PS has rear drums whilst the 90PS has rear discs.

Engine failure is almost as rare has hen's teeth. So I would not start worrying over where engine blocks etc come from.

Of either of those diesel models simply buy the best condition example you can find within your budget.

ECUs are not the same
Exhaust emission standards are not the same
the turbos are not the same (the 90 uses a VTG turbo)

There were only 7000 90s made. It's almost as rare as a 1.2. The turbos are more likely to go on a 90 than on a 75, so if absolute minimal cost is the aim, then stick to a 75.

Your call.

I've driven both and prefer the 90 over the 75 and my petrol over both.

Thank you all for the answers.

As far as i can see, the major differnce in the spareparts between the 1.4 TDI 75 and the 1.4 TDI 90 is:
- Rear disk instead of Drums
- different ECU
( I suppose only available as genuine)
- different Turbo
(is this turbo used on other vehicles or available as aftermarket / rebuild)
- different emission standards
(suppose this is controlled by the ECU)
is the exhaust system the same ?

Really Bret? I've always thought I'd prefer the TDI, but having never actually driven one it's a bit of an empty lust..

Why is it you prefer the petrol version?

I like revs and I really like being able to blip the throttle on the way down through the box. The TDI clutches are always heavier, making it more difficult, and the engine itself revs "heavier".
I like the torque wave but find myself feeling it's a bit of a one-note symphony.... a turbo on a petrol would be something else :D

I also very much like the way that the petrol balances on the throttle and slides and doesn't argue quite so much when picking up on very slippery surfaces, as we have for essentially six months of the year. The 90 was a huge giggle on the track, though .... :) - I prefer forward motion :D
This year in Germany was the first time in a while I've wished for lots more power. If you can keep the momentum up, the 75 is a really nicely balanced machine.

We should have one of everything this year on the track. I will ask if I can drive each one and get an indication of its speed, with and without ESP - without is more fun but ESP will allow slides anyway, as long as there's no rotation.
