what else can go wrong with a 175k mileage A2TDI

as some of you know our 51 Plate A2 TDI has covered a massive 175K miles without too much trouble.

its currently having its turbo rebuilt/replaced, parts changed to date, inc cam belt, anti roll bar inc links/bushes, starter motor, convinence unit.

now is my dilema..

do i cut my losses and sell it for probably not much money, or keep it.

my local independant audi dealer suggests the clutch/flywheel would need replacing at some time in the future, but could not really think of much else, apart from maybe an intercooler - although he suggested these did not really give problems exept on cars that have been remapped - ours had not.

can anyone think what other big expenses coudl be looming, and what mileage can i realisticaly expect the car to achieve.

thanks

John

youve probably already answered my question in your description but am I right in thinking you are still on original clutch? Thats quite impressive.

Also what was the reason behind the turbo replacement. Was it total failure? or oil seals or precautionary?

I dont know what the life of the unit injectors is but i have read of those being re-conditioned anytime after 100,000. Again i guess you havent had any of those replaced?

Well done youve obviously treated it well.

Gary

yes original clutch.

turbo, lack of power when hot, leaking oil.

still on original injectors too.

yes it was being driven from somerset to holland each week in its early years, it had covered something like 90k in its first 18months of life. So its had good miles. If you saw it you would think it had done 40k miles

no real wear on seats, nothing really. If they still made them today i would definatly buy another one.

I know youve got itchy feet just now John, but I think you must have replaced all the bits and bobs that would be considered fair wear for the cars age and miles. We all know the stories of Tdi's that have achieved huge mileages with few problems. So I think you just need to decide if you want that new car or not! Your current motor will be a great buy for someone on a budget, especially if it looks like 40k miles as you say, and the maintenance you have lavished on the car is another sure plus. We have a couple of members after a bargain TDi - maybe sound them out and see if you can tee up a buyer for when you find a more recent A2. The A1 is a while away yet - and its still not gonna be an A2!! ;)

personally i would keep it a little while longer and at least get something back from what you are spending at present. After all what would you replace it with? i know I would struggle to find something which matches the many attributes I find the A2 so ideal for me at the moment.

The a1 goes into production late this year for on sale roll out across EU in 2010 so not too long to wait. however the a2 replacement proper is a couple of years away and that is my target at the moment! At least your experience gives me confidence mine should get to 120k miles without any undue expense and problems!

I'm a little sad... I thought mine had a lot of miles.... 160,000 miles from new. 02 plate.

So far we're still on the same clutch and exhaust, injectors, everything apart from filters and brake discs! I'm still on the same DRUMS! the only real problems we've had have been anti-roll bar bushes [which need doing at the moment].

I've no idea how much more is left in the A2, but I think it may go forever... I'd really like to get to 250,000 but I'm now not doing the miles like I did, so it might take ages to get to 200 even.

If it was me I'd keep it... you can now get engines gearboxes etc [my mate can anyhow] so there isn't a lot more to do?? especially if you are having your turbo redone/replaced.

I'd keep it and get it 200,000k!

Sweet

PS would agree with the seats our looks like it's done way less miles.

What else can go wrong with a 175k mileage A2TDI?

John,

Three points:

1. What would you replace it with ~ only another A2 with less miles??
2. You won't find a better car for the same money!!!
3. Better the devil you know! Any repairs will cost less than 1.

I got to say I agree whole heartedly with the better the devil you know approach. And lets face it, its hardly a devil!

My 02 plate TDI has 105k on it now and i was starting to get a bit itchy about turbo and injectors etc. But i concur with most people in that it just feels like a car with half the mileage on. Everyone who has driven it, including a guy who picked it up to do an MOT for me thought the mileage was wrong or something.

The stigma attached to buying a car with 175k on the clock will be high despite it obviously not being a problem and people will want to knock the price down a lot. It may be worth more to yourself to keep it especially considering the money spent on it. The turbo I imagine would be one of the bigger expenses and you've just had it done.

When your turbo was leaking oil do you mean dripping oil? or leaking into the inlet and burning? Im just interested as i've heard very few reports on turbo failures despite some of the high mileages we see on here.

Gary

After spending the money to get it all done why let someone else enjoy it, i would keep hold of it
What else would you get?, if you got a another A2 it mat not be as reliable as the one you've got now.

Phil

Very True - i would love a nice leather clad one with a bench seat, sat nav, and all the wissles, but they seem as rare as the proverbial rocking horse S***

so i think i will keep it for a bit at least and keep a look out - mind you my daughter is 11 - I know 6 years is a long time but when i finally find a pucka A2, then i might mothball it - daft i know, but it really would be a classic then:)

I would keep it.
I went for a high milage one myself deciding at least I knew for sure the milage would be right.
I suppose its not worth much, but nothing another engine, turbo, gearbox etc to keep it going..
Bodywork is the main issue as long as you can keep it tidy the rest is always replaceable especially as more get written off.
Someone had a complete car on here for £1800 albeit a write off however it was a complete 90 bhp car bar some suspension damage.
A recon engine must be £1500 fitted so almost worth that for its engine and box alone.

Long motorway miles are far easier on a car than town miles anyway
Keep it going:cool:

I went through a similar thought process just recently. Having decided to "add" on some parts to our 51 plate (66k & one previous owner), wondered if the money spent was not better applied to a newer car. Ours has however been etremely reliable needing only an anti-roll bar and has a number of items fitted to it already, so i took the decision to rather keep "the devil" i know. The process of adding kit to it now is in motion and considering the relatively low mileage we do in the A2 and my intention is to keep it for a few more years at least ... Mike, i'll be knocking soon ;)
Seems most members agree then, hold on to them and enjoy.

Yeah, i intend to keep my TDI until i run it to the ground too.

Us too, I think an aluminium car with a TDi engine at 54k miles and clocking up less than 10k a year could take a good while to run into the ground if all goes to plan - and we keep it between the hedges of course!! :D
