What type of oil please......?

Hi gang,

recently had an interim service by Audi and they switched me from variable to fixed servicing as I only do about 5-6k miles of town driving a year. Thing is I don't know what grade of oil to use as a top up for when the oil light comes on. Used to use 5w30 Castrol, but is this just longer life oil and should I be using a different grade like 10w40?

Can someone help with this please?

no, use 5w30 synthetic vw 507 spec.
Given all the other stuff you spend money on its not a big extravagance.

I get some carlube branded stuff from my local motor factors, 5 litres for £35.

I passionately avoid cheap oil.
 
hi there...

fully synthetic 5w-40 is the factory recommended oil weight...if that is not available I believe you can use 5w-30, but check before you put that in...I personally use Mobil 1 because it is easy to find and thats what i've been using for years now
 
Do try and find out what kind of oil they used (maybe buy an extra liter from them), because different oil brands/grades tend to foam when mixed, and town driving means you'll need to top-up a big enough quantity till the next change to be in danger of experiencing the above mentioned phenomenon.
Had this happen once on my petrol car and it wasn't a pretty experience.

VW 504.00 is the latest oil spec for for A2 petrol engine std and long life services - more info here - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showpost.php?p=56250&postcount=4

VW 507.00 is the diesel version but in truth the Castrol Edge version meets both specs and is suitable for petrol and diesel engines.
