What type of service should I go for?

I've had my car for nearly a year now. It's on Long Life Service intervals. It's now at 86,500 miles and the DIS is saying that the next service is due in 300miles.

The car has been serviced twice to date by the Aberdeen main agent, with the timing belt and water pump, etc being replaced at the last service.

The last owner had a 40 mile commute every day to work, but I only do approx. 16 miles per day.

My question is should I get another "Long Life" service carried out, or change to a "normal" annual service?

Any advice or opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks very much for the link Spike.

I see that basically Long Life servicing should apply if you do more than 40 miles per day, so I think I will revert to a standard annual service.

It will also be much easier on my wallet! :)

My car is currently on the longlife service schedule, just clicked 30,000 miles it indicates 500 miles until the next service.

I too am likely to switch to annual servicing. I called the 2 local Audi main dealers this morning, one quoted me £260 and the other £210, does that sound about right?

I am sure this ia annual service, as the first garage quoted me £365 for the longlife service.

I've been quoted £180.53 from a local VW/Audi specialist (not a main dealer).

When I last got my tyres changed I was advised to get my rear wheel alignment checked & adjusted, so they've also agreed to do this for another £45.
 
Graham, someone has been pulling your plonker!

The rear wheel alignment cannot be adjusted as everything is fixed, you can only adjust the front wheels in relation to the rears.

Sounds like you might have been fleeced to the tune of £45.

The rear wheel geometry cannot be adjusted individually as you say but the 'toe' settings can be equalised side to side by moving the beam axle mountings -

Centralising toe setting at rear wheels
The total toe setting at the rear wheels cannot be adjusted.
The individual toe values can be centralised by moving the rear axle.

– Slacken off bolts -arrows- at mounting brackets -1-.
2 - Axle beam
– Centralise the individual toe settings by moving the mounting brackets.
– Install new hexagon bolts and tighten.
If the total toe setting is outside the permitted tolerance, or if it is not possible to centralise the individual settings, the axle beam must be checked for damage and renewed if necessary.

I haven't had the work done yet. The car's booked in for 02/02/09. I don't think the old tyres were actually all that bad, and they had done a fair mileage. So do you think I should tell them to forget checking the wheel alignment?
 
GrahamR, just a thought, if a specialist is £180, personally I will hapilly pay the additional £30 for an Audi service history.

Nothing against specialists, I had my previous S4 serviced religiously at MRC, they know the S/RS cars better than main dealers, but somehow feel an Audi dealership should be able to cope with an A2.
 
Service carried out

Got the car serviced today, and right enough, the garage did not think there was anything to check with the rear wheel alignment.

The bad news was that there were a few other things required:

- my near side front spring was broken (don't know how I failed to notice this!).

- the near side brakes were also binding, so also ended up getting the brakeshoes replaced.

- some of the rear bulbs were "white" so were replaced.

Total bill including the annual service with Castrol fully synthetic oil came to £318.37 which i did not think was too bad, considering the spring and brake shoes were replaced.
