What up-to-date dashcam should I consider now I’m in the market for one?

I've got a Nextbase 522GW which was the top of the range until about two weeks ago when the 622GW was announced, can't fault the image quality.

As mentioned before I've mounted it the the left of my rear view mirror with the cable running across headlining behind the A pillar cover then pushed across the glovebox and under bit in front of the gear stick, under the seat and into the cig lighter.

The problem with the A2 is a lack of power sockets for todays motoring. I have retro fitted a boot socket and also hard wired a three way 12v socket with 2 usb sockets. This is hard wired into ignition live fuse in the fuse box, as I wanted these to turn off when the engine is off. Just wire into permanent live instead if you require always on. The three way sits up under the dash just on the consul side of the steering wheel. I have my dash cam and sat nav plugged in on their 12v sockets and 2 usb leads for phones (one usb c other usb mini ) . Leads routed around window, down the a pillar and behind the drivers dash. Usb leads routed and come out under the front ash tray.. That way the badly positioned 12v socket behind the hand brake does not have cables running from it forward.

@johnyfartbox This is similar to the sockets I fitted. Although looking at it the 12v fly lead was about 1m long, this one looks shorter and thought my one had 2 not 3 usb sockets. Removed the 12v plug from the end and connected the earth to the chassis bolt that holds the fuse box and connected the positive to an ignition live fuse. Only took about 45 minutes including fishing the other leads in.

@tbc could you share pics, including from the drivers seat / your line of sight?
thanks!

Hi all,

Bumping this thread as @timmus is currently about to install a hard-wired power supply for a dashcam into Audrey.

Has anyone successfully managed to mount a front and rear (in one unit, not with a seperate rear window mount camera) into the A2 that doesn’t impinge into the driver’s field of vision and also doesn’t interfere with the sun visor operation? See this diagram from the Nextbase website:

I’m pretty sure this won’t be possible on the A2 without the unit blocking both my field of vision and the sun visor; but just checking before I order a Nextbase front-only camera to be tucked up in front of the rear view mirror.

I have seen front / rear dash cams that include a rear view mirror. This mirror clips over the existing Audi mirror and has a forward facing camera offset to one side. The separate rear camera is then connected by cable into the unit along with the power supply. There is an area of the rear view mirror that contains a display. Not 100% sure if the display is selectable between front and rear cameras.

Not to all tastes but it will not obstruct sun visors or drivers view. Take a look to see if this may be suitable for you.

Not singling this one out merely an example....

Since dash cam lenses are very wide angle, I can't see how a front mounted, rear facing unit can avoid 2/3rds of the frame being occupied by the car's interior. This view is not experience based. I have an Aukey in the front, bought a couple of years back from Amazon (approx £60) in the TT and A2, which are fine. Don't need GPS, as the phone knows where I am, in real time, (Google Maps, Timeline).
Mac.

Mount the rear camera at the back of the car. The unit I suggested has the front camera built onto the rear view mirror and a separate rear camera to mount at the back of the car.

I have an auto-dim rear view mirror so I’m not sure this solution is for me - but thanks for the suggestion.

Have you seen the posts earlier in this thread? It’s very difficult to do this neatly.

Good point - I know the Nextbase one is specifically designed for this application however - they also do one to film the occupants of the car (probably most popular with taxi drivers)
