Wheel bearing tool necessary?

Am I right that this kit exists for the convenience of installing new bearings without removing the strut from the car? I am changing springs and damper so strut is coming off anyway.. I am planning to use a hydraulic press.

You will damage the bearings unless you either use the tool on or off the car or machine suitable sleeves to use with the press
The basic principle is that you must only apply pressure on the ends of the OUTER race only
If you use a press without the sleeves then you will apply the load to the hub which in turn will apply the pressure through the balls to the outer race. This WILL damage both the balls and the race ways

Btw watch out for the fake skf bearings particularly on eBay they are VERY convincing fakes but one of mine lasted a mere 4000 miles and the sellers 2 year warranty was not worthy the ink in printing it- buyer be ware comes to mind

Well done for highlighting this!
I only get my bearings from the SKF website now which they set up to try and reduce the sale of fake bearings in the UK. It's a big problem.
I was supplied a fake bearing by AutoDoc. I reported it to SKF. They apparently investigated. What probably happened was someone bought a genuine one from AutoDoc and used their safe return to send back a fake one. Beware!

Ouch. I got a set of SKF VKBA3569 from autodoc before Christmas - is there any check that one can do to try to ascertain that they are real?

You can try scanning the code on the box and enter it into the SKF website as a check but apparently fraudsters are also faking the codes. The fake ones appear identical on the outside. SKF have to cut them open to confirm.
Not only wheel bearings are being copied. Pretty sure I was sold a fake Bosch fuel pump for the S2 by KMS. Lasted 800 miles but was out of the 12 month warranty and KMS weren't budging!

Glad I bought the Ridex bearing then. No one is faking that ? AFAIK there is nothing wrong with the bearing that sits there.. wonder if I should re-use it?

I am changing the strut due to broken caliper mount threads. I made the mistake of attempting to helicoil it... ? DO NOT recommend. So now I need a new strut, wheel bearing, wheel bearing tool.... Should have gotten the rep. kit with pilot hole, pilot drill, and rivet nut to begin with!!
