When should I service?

Hi all

Bought a 2004 tdi 90 last year with 35000 miles on it.

Service records state first service done at 26k, major service (the 40k work) done at 33k at an independant garage, which was exactly 1 year ago (different owner) and inspection service done by dealer at 35k some months later.

Now I am up to 42K and the inspecion countdown states 3k to service, so I am thinking maybe the dealer reset the computer to fixed servicing? I mostly drive mixed town and motorway with regular 20 mile each way commute mostly on motorway.

The car is due an mot and I was thinking of maybe getting an inspection and mot at kwik fit, as the 40k work is already done, and then 2 years from now I'll be at 70ish k and will probably do the cambelt service then.

Is there any point doing this or should I just mot it? Seems a bit ott to give it a 3rd oil change in the space of 12 months...

Any advice welcome

thx in advance, Anthony

Hi Anthony
I'd have the MOT done at an Audi dealer as its free and they will be much more thorough than kwik fit. If it fails you don't have to have the repair work done by them - just make sure you have enough time to take it elswhere before the test has expired.
I agree with you that it seems pointless to change the oil before the next service is actually due (fixed services are at approx 10,000miles or 1 year) After that decide if you want to go with long life servicing - which needs special oil to VW 507.00 spec to allow the 2 year change period.
Personally I use the long life oil but keep to the fixed service intervals

There are some words of wisdom from Audi on the different service schedules here -

Free mot at Audi? I note retest is chargeable - had experience of these deals before and they always find one or other spurious fail to fix in order to make their money. I really don't trust dealers! But thank you for the suggestion.

Actually thinking about it the seller performed a service at 35k (at least the book says so, but they are a long established company) and I imagine did not use expensive long life oil, so another service will be due at 12months/10k anyway, or 4 months/3k from now.

As kwik fit have an option of service + mot + longlife oil for £119 (- £5 for online booking) then I could use that now and be back on longlife schedule, allowing me to do the cambelt service 2 years from now...

OR could use the standard service mot and oil for £99 and do the same next year, which would cost £80 more but that includes the mot so efectively just £30 more over the 24 month period (assuming mot is £50).

That being the case do you believe that a 10k/12 month schedule with normal oil is better than 20k/2 year with longlife?

thanks again, Anthony

actually, thinking about it I might try the audi dealer mot. If they fail it I'll just go elsewhere so nowt to lose really...

and thinking further I think I'll just get an oil service at 10k/12months as that is all that is due on fixed schedule anyway, then next year I'll be at about 55k so I'll have the full service and maybe longlife oil then...

thanks again for the tip!
