I am trying to change oil on the gearbox (GRJ / 02J).
I have attache a picture, which shows the gearbox bottom.

The fillerplug is on the front of the gearbox (on the picture left side / top just to the right of the rubbertube).
But I can not find the drain plug. can anyone help ?

Do NOT undo any of the bolts visible - the drain plug (which is exactly the same shape as the filler plug) lives under the bottom mount for the gearbox, near the final drive area.

You need to remove the 3 x 16mm hex bolts that hold the mount to the gearbox and slacken the 16mm bolt so you can slide the mount to one side, revealing the drain plug.

Mike

Thank You for the fast answer Mike

I was afraid so, and I could not find it in the Elsawin, so I did better ask the expert's on A2OC.

I'm intrigued! How often is a gearbox oil change recommended? BR, Mark.

Its like brake fluid i suppose every couple of years but as Mike as found most haven't been changed from factory, when doing the 5th gear mod draining the old oil off some have had well not a lot in the box and what was left was not very good at all. Mine had been in 10 years

Then mine needs doing too. Great! :) I hope the choice of gearbox oils is simpler than engine oils.... BR, Mark.

Hi Mark
Unless things have changed, Audi don't actually recommend changing the gearbox oil. Oxidisation and moisture from condensation will inevitably result in contamination over time so its a good idea to change it occasionally - every 5 years is about right in my opinion.
Stick with genuine Audi gearbox oil. I've tried a few different top spec variations on previous Audis but none have been any better than the genuine stuff - and many were much worse.

It's really simple - go to Audi, ask them for 2 x 1litre bottles of G060 726 A2 - this is the uprated Bluemotion spec gearbox oil and is the best and only stuff I (and Audi) recommend. It's not cheap but it is the best. One member on here tried Millers as he really liked Millers other oils, but after a month of having it in his gearbox, he asked me to change it for the Audi stuff!

Nuff said, I'd say!

Cheers,

Mike

Hello

Thank You for the advice about the recommended oil (G060 725 A2)

But the oil change did not help me, I still have a noise like not enough oil. But the gearbox did have oil to the described level, before the oil change (oil was running out when I removed the fillerplug)

And therefore a new question:
Is the differential and the gearbox sharing the same oil (is a change the oil in the gearbox at the same time a change of oil in the differential) ?
Or is it 2 seperate houses, so I have to change oil in the differential as well ?
If the differential has its own oil, what is then recommended as oil for the differntial?

Sorry to bump such an old thread - but what are these bolts at the bottom of the gearbox? The ones I definitely shouldn't remove...
Gearbox.jpg

Have to ask as I stupidly took one of them off yesterday (1.4 petrol) and about a litre of dark oil came out. I located the gearbox filler point, opened it up and was able to add a litre of gear oil before it started leaking back out.

I'm really hoping it's all just part of the same gearbox oil so no lasting damage? Have driven the car today (cautiously) but everything sounds fine and works as should.

Any advice or info gratefully received - can't find out what they are. Giving myself major anxiety at my own stupidity!

Agree it's all the same oil and can't see you could cause any serious damage

Fairly sure the bolts hold the locating pins for the selector forks which are sealed with O.rings. Worst case the O.rings may weep slightly if they have taken on a 'set' or hardened with age.

Item 12 on the parts diagm shows the bolts (top and bottom of the casing) - http://audi.7zap.com/en/rdw/audi+a2/a2/2003-248/3/311-311084/#11

Have you re-drained the gearbox completely or is there now a mix of old and new oil ?

Cheers Spike

That's a big relief to hear that - it's my wife's car (which I drive any chance I get) and she loves it so had visions of serious repercussions (and self recrimination) if I'd harmed it.

It will be half old and half new now since the gear oil capacity is about 1.9 litres. Filled it back up with the only gear oil I could find late on a Sunday afternoon (80W-90 GL4) after I'd managed to hunt down a 17mm hex fitting at Machine Mart. Will get the proper spec stuff from local Audi dealer this week and do a full change. What came out was pitch black so can call it a happy accident now.

Many thanks - really put my mind at rest. A2OC to the rescue!
