Which engine oil for 1.4 TDI

Well the 507 spec is the Castrol edge 5 -30 ...so are some on here saying that the 505.01 should be used instead ?

I doubt that anyone who gives it more than a moment's thought would recommend 505.01 over 507.00. Oil has improved out of all recognition over the past 20 years and 507.00 spec oil is definitely the one to go for.

Agreed but that oil didn't exist when the A2 was first launched as far as I know?

It didn't, and VAG had a pretty baffling array of different oil specs on offer in those days. 504.00 / 507.00 spec oils are better, and can be used across all the A2 power options as a bonus, so why would people persist in buying an outdated spec oil?

'507' spec oil outperforms the old '505' recommendation in every parameter

And a summary of VW oil specs posted by Steve c - https://www.oilspecifications.org/volkswagen.php

For info, the recommended oil was Castrol Edge 0w30 when the A2 was released back in 2000

Cheers Spike

Never knew it was 0w30, everyday is a school day!

From the year dot of ist Audi a2 ownership many moons ago ...I’ve used Castrol edge 5 -30 inc genuine oil filter ..done every year at mot time no matter what the milage ...I wish in layman’s terms someone can explain why this is not a good idea and That 5 40 is the better option ...?? we do very little motorway driving it’s mainly up to 30 mile trips or even shorter journeys with the odd long trip thrown in ..
I'd say you are using the correct oil, my A2 only travels a few hundred meters then national speed limit applies, one mile more and it is motorway. It gets driven as hard as it will go therefore I prefer 5W-40 particularly for hot summer driving. Oh and it is my towing car too and it pulls some weights.
